Yep is possible, there is an italian brand model that does this. It works on single phase, has a 15amp plug but works okay on a 10amp socket (little adapter made up). Price was approx $2500(new). Cuts neat and straight, and any shape. brand name : Esseti, Plasmecut 452, S75. www.trafimet.com
And yes you need a compressor, just any ordinary domestic type will do the job. books say air pressure 5bar, consumption 150l/min.

you'll get a better cut with an oxy,

and u have more of a wider range of what thickness u can cut,

just go a oxy bottle, and a propane bottle.

a mate is looking at importing a heap of tig/arc/plasma combo units, around 160 amp, so i guess that'd run on single phase, around a grand, wouldn't be the rolls royce model, but thats still pretty good for the money, would cut upto around 20mm from memory :D

check out these sites, interesting stuff
http://www.petrogen.com

this is where it came from, a good metal fabrication links site:

mate has one they had spent $3500 on it it can cut up to 1/2 '' or more and it does make a cleaner cut ,there is less prep work on the job after the cut [wich yes can vary according to your oxy cutting skills] compared to a oxy and there is a wider range of things to cut compared to the oxy

i have an oxy / lpg set up now and i can't stand it. tell me more about yours's. i must have the wrong tips or something. most i have cut is 12mm and it takes ages. acyletene is so much quicker from my experience, but no one can tell me how to set up my lpg. it should work nearly as well as its only 200 degrees cooler. be good to see what you say.

i don't have one at home, yet ;) . we use em at work,

i guess it would depend on ya size tip and what pressure u put in it.

i'd use about a 10 tip. thinner cut.

a mate got one about a month ago, its a liquidarc branded one, 3 phase, and cuts up to 20mm plate with ease. it was approx $2500 here in brisbane and is the easiest, quickest, cleanest way to cut steel around i believe
