Hilux diffs
hi guys iam keen to put hilux diffs in my suzuki maybe u guys can help me a little better then the zuke guys can
I´m gonna watch this one because this is part of my plans as well.
Might get something definite here. A lot to learn though by plowing through the zook forum; seems the zook needs the lux axles if it´s to go beyond a certain point in modifications.

if you don´t know its impossible, you just might do it!
dare i say it in the Toyota forum, MQ Nissan patrol diffs. Same spring spacing as WT Sierra, stronger, cheaper and can get 4.6 ratio.
They are heavy, this does help with stability and do need to be shaved but thats easy.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
No doubt the Patrol diffs are fine, even available with manual lockers I think, and with the same spring spacing the installation is that much easier. But... in most cases you would go spoa at the same time and then you would have to make new spring pads anyway or move the old ones to the topside of the axles. Older, solid-front-axle hilux has 4.88 ratio which is a better ratio than 4.56 although problably weaker. I´m not too sure about the jap diffs but Dana/Spicer has one more cog on the 4.56 pinion than on the 4.88; more contact area = more strength.
As to weight, in my opinion increased axle weight does not add much to stability, it all adds to unsprung weight and thats bad for handling in general. Given choice I would always go for the LIGHTEST axles that were strong enough for my purposes. All other things being equal.
On the other hand, lets say for a Hilux with a V8, the Patrol axles would probably be ideal, especially if they are cheaper than ´Cruiser axles.
Just for the record; what is the track of the Patrol axles?

The MQ diffs work very well on a SPUA Zook, the front right is cast housing, spring pad and axle tube. This makes it difficult to weld to.
There is no need for driving here in Victoria to go SPOA and really with a well designed car (not just diffs) i do not see that there is a reason to go SPOA to drive anywhere other than shopping malls.
What size tyres do you want to run?
BTW probably best to move into the zook section, there is a lot of knowledge on Lux diffs under zooks there.

parts, methods, Problems
hey again i want to know what parts are needed and what methods have been used to do a hilux conversion and any problems that i may encounter the search function bring up like 200 pages so it pretty use less i know iam not the only person want definative answers to this question
Sierrajim, I bow to your superior knowledge about the Patrol axles, I honestly don´t know anything about them specifically. However, an axle is an axle is an axle as the saying goes and any axle with the springs underneath it WILL get hung up on the springs sooner or later if those axles with the vehicle on top of them does any serious offroading. But spoa or spua is of course a matter of choice and taste. My point was that if a Zook is used seriously enough to make the change to lux axles feasible, spoa seems logical. May be wrong though.
As to welding the cast parts of an axle housing; again my experience is limited to Dana/Spicer, but they present no problems. Remember that the tubes are welded to the center and the knuckles and what the factory can do, us shade tree mecs can do just as well or better. Always believe that!
Those centers and knuckles are cast STEEL and not cast IRON and that makes all the difference when it comes to welding, just preheat slightly and weld with ISO class 7018 sticks or compareable MAG-rod. Measure the preheating temp by spitting on the heated area: when the spittle boils, you´ve reached a nice welding temp. Then just weld away. Piece of f...ing cake!

Hilux diff
i just want to know other methods available and ne problem that cn happen

SPOA to SPUA debate i do not want to get involved with. There are so many reasons to do either and so many reasons not to do either.
Welding the cast knuckle is achievable, has been done before. But no as easy as welding on a "normal" diff.
Keep in mind the stability of your rig. Take a look at the moon buggies being built, nice and low COG.
SPUA leaves can be used as skids if you have your spring plates set up well this will provide less chance of getting caught up on your diff.
Bash/skid plates can be used to protect your vehicle.
Re your Hilux diffs you will need to
-move axle pearches,
-purchase or fabricate steering arm to accomodate the ramoval of the J arm steering linkage,
-have driveshafts made or do a search in the Zook section for driveshafts posted by droopypete, or PM him i think he has hilux shafts in his zook.
-brake lines made
-longer shocks
-get it engineered,, while you're at it look at doing RUF spring swap
Are you wanting to do this swap yourself or get someone else to do it for you?
PS.
This should be in the Zook section
