Fast idle redux.

Post by Pickwickian »

i know there was a thread on this which started a few years ago....just thought i would revive it for my own sakes and probably some other ppl given the cold snap.

yesterday the fast idle stuck on 2300rpm (93 mav tb42). its easy to remedy by pushing the white plastic lobe thing on the carby back around. it feels as though there is a fair bit of resistance even when the engine is hot. will lubing it fix this? or is there a spring or something which pulls it back that may be buggered?

I pulled all the air filter off and cleaned and lubed the white cam to no avail. I then tried to adjust the screw that sits on the cam but I couldn't undo the lock nut without bending the bracket. So I bent the bracket out of the way of the cam and went for a drive to see what happened. The fast idle now doesn't work (Obviously) but it still has the problem of revving at 1600rpm until you come to a complete stop, then the revs drop back to a normal idle. It has got me stuffed...

yeah when i moved it by hand it just felt like lube would do sh/t all.
if i start up with out any throttle it wont rev up so much. so im guessing that the fast idle is set by putting ur foot down before u start? when it does rev high it usually goes to about 2000rpm. i dont know how it gets pushed that far around. if i pop the bonnet and turn the cam back by hand it runs like normal.

from the old thread it appears a fair few ppl have had this problem....so just waiting to see if they got it to work properly.

I had this happen on mine- 88 mav, TB42. The mates helped with the fix. Clean around the back of the carby by using WD40 to help lube and clean the crap out of the way. Then when got home lubesd all the area with machine oil. like the missus has for the sewing machine. Worked great, due to be done again but was 12months ago when I did it last.
