what to do after rolling...
just thought it might be useful to have a list of things to do/check after flopping or rolling a rig! i'm sure there's other ppl out there that are as dumb as me.... what things do we need to look at before starting the engine again, and why?? what should we check after starting up again?

First thing to check is definately the passengers (they are the ones who can sue:) People before machinery, then a thorough visual check of the vehicle before you try restarting.
All areas where a fluid leak may have occurred, including brake system (master cylinder etc), battery, fuel lines and cooling system.
Depending on the reason for rolling and severity of roll, check undercarraige (Steering etc), any part of the vehicle which may have sustained any impact.
Remove anything loose, such as bumper, mirror, aerial, flared guard. It would really top things off if when limping home something broke off and cuased another accident. If it can't be removed ensure it is secure (imagine bonnet flying up).
If in doubt about the safety of driving away, play it safe and don't drive it. That being said the nature of what we do means that sometimes you may have no option but to try. Not all rollovers are serious, particularly offroad where we are more likely to go over at extremely slow speed as opposed to a highway rollover.

You may as well leave it plugged in.ludacris wrote:I just unplug my coil being petrol then turn the motorover a few times.

The reason for pulling plugs out is to avoid Hydraulic compression if the cylinder has filled with oil whilst sleeping.
Definately check all fluid and pull spark/glow plugs and crank till cylinders are clear.
usually only one or two have enough oil to be a problem.
Something witty said by someone famous
I'm surprised no one has said "get out the camera and get a good photo"
Normally I fall over without any issues, but once I got battery acid and brake fluid onto the carb, which destroyed the plastic part of the choke mechanism, making zook run real bad a day later.
A no spill battery would be very wise, and rinsing off any fluids could be wise after a woopsy, too.
Only once have I had a oil in the wrong places issue, when I fell on right side, in a difficult to recover situation, so it was on side longer than is good..oil got into air filter and smoked like a addict for the rest of Ellis tk.
Important thing is to use common sense, and make sure it is a safe recovery. IE, it won't roll away down a hill, or fall onto a helper etc

putting it in 5 gear and pushing it backwards untill all cylinders have done a full revolution will help to clean out the cylynders if they have oil above them. That way the exhaust vavle opens first in the engine and pushes the oil out into the exhaust. Can be fairly smokey when you start up for a while though.

sorry hypolux tend to disagree with you on this one,the eng may start and bend rods in the mean time.my opinion only still safer to pull plugs and crank over, but it still comes back to individual rollover and circumstances.
it would depend on how long the car was shiny side down.
The steps are quite simple
1. Put the car back on its wheels, photograph the damage, make sure it starts
2. Try to drive the obsticle again
3. if it rolls again go back to step 1.
