1HDT question

Post by beanz2 »

Hi guys,

Does anybody here know what changes Toyota made to the 4.2L turbo diesel (1HDT) engine in 1993?

Bearings were played with (composition) injecter pipes were larger, floot in tappet cover had smaller opening to stop oil bypass, and rings were better quality all this is compared to first model hdt...90 on.

Thanks, Andrew. Are there parts that do not interchange between the versions?

i have been told by afew people that toyota noted a problem with the rings and bottom end bearings and it was part of a 100,000 service to change these.

any truth in this?

The big end bearings has been well discussed but I haven't heard of the rings failing.

Gday
The rings dont fail, but they do wear out and let oil past fairly quickly (100k kms) and ive heard that in Japan, Lead is not allowed to be used in the manufacture of the bottom end bearings...dont know if thats true or not...there were many recalls for the motors in the S1 80...mainly for pump and injecter lines issues, Toyota were paying for the bigends to be replaced for years after....and it didnt fix the problem till the next motor...the hdft

I also hadn't heard about the rings, I regularly service a couple of high-km (300,000 +) early 1HD-T's and they only go through half a litre or so per 5000km, which I had always put down to crankcase vapour burn rather than ring bypass.
