Buying help!?! Hilux 4x4 Dual Cab 2.8D 1990-1994...

Post by @cer »

Hey guys,

I am about to go out looking for Hilux's 4x4's around the 1990-1994 range with dual cab and the 2.8D engine. I have got some questions that I would like some answers to before I go out looking so that I know what I am looking for.

1) What are the major problems that occur in these model hilux's (rust, mechanical probs etc...) and how do you determine if the problem exists? Where are the major rusting areas?

2) How many kms do these 2.8D engine's usually last for and what kind of kms should I expect? Ive seen some around the 250 - 277k kms range... Is this too many? After how many kms should I expect to need a rebuild and how much is does this usually cost?

3) What kind of maintenance do these vehicles require? Are services required at every 5000kms like normal petrol engines? Any other major maintenance issues?

4) What fuel economy does the 2.8D engine give in city driving and also in country/highway driving?

5) Are there any modifications that can be done to improve the performance of the 4x4 on or offroad that are can be seen as almost compulsory?

6) Anything else I need to know?

Thanks guys your help if very much appreciated in finding me a good buy

Cheers

ok problems might be transfer case leaking, and rust in the rear fire wall maybe not so much in the dual but in the single cabs they do.servicing the rear diffs aswell as if not serviced could have some problems in these sort of amount of kms.biggest problem by far is the leaf springs sagging
Klms? i have a mate who has done 415kms on his and has only replaced the clutch pretty good i reckon.
Servicing=stricly oil changing every 5000kms and fuel and oil filters every 10000 kmsi also do my coolant , gearbox and tranfer and diffs every 50000kms once a year for me.
Fuel economy=500kms a week minimum depends how you drive it
Mods =shitloads if you have the money legal compusory mods there arent that many but there are a couple
