Auto or Manual

Post by SUB TJ »

I'm at a cross roads. My manual box is just about shot again.I think it's gonna have to get 5th replaced at the very least, won't know till it's all pulled apart, but am thinking about swapping in an auto.I want to get everyones opinion about the age old battle AUTO vs Manual.Which is better for off roading...

Also if anyone out there has done the auto swap thing and can give me some details of what I'm in for.
I HATE mud...

TOUGH call......I think you REALLY need to look at what type & sorta wheeling your doing most of.....for mud & water - I'd pick maunal because they tend to be more forgiving when they take a glug.....on Sand the auto is simply unbeatable. On the rocks the auto juuuuust takes the edge....but a nice low manual can be a thing to enjoy....in traffic the Auto get the nod again.....
Personally I'm thinking the Wagon will get a TH700R4, the CJ possibly a TH350 and the TJ a T18 :D

thanks everyone.. just thinking out loud ATM,,

CJer 5th is a weak link in the TJ I know of a few that have self destructed.. the 5th gear flat changes over the rocks are really smooth...till ya land!!! .

Bill I'm bit worried after seeing what your auto did to your front driveshaft.. :P

Paz the braking isn't really a big concern for me,most of the hills I do even the manual with a terra low isn't low enough,,,

Wooders just got one thing to say...MUD IS BAD!!!!

4 speed Auto with manual valve body and all that garbage

Look at most of the comp rigs in the US they ahve all gone auto.

Then again TJPete does have that NV4500 for sale that would work well with your terra low

I am seriously considering an auto for my project rig.

It will make driving at the mall that much easier...

That's what I'm thinking too as mines a mall crawler auto must be the go that way I won't burn the clutch out on the speed humps.. :P

You're not bloody wrong there Jumbo! Those speed humps are killers! Most of the time I put it in 4LO to get over them.
I'd rather have a sister in a whorehouse than a Toyota in the shed.

If you have the power, run an auto. If no run a manual. I run a t700 behind my chev in my cj7 and love it.
I have never had a problem with it running away on me down hills either.
In my cj8 i have a 283 chev with a 4spd manual. I like the hoon factor with a manual but offroad I think an auto is best.
