Fuel Savings (Diesel)
Well I'm sick of paying $1.20 a ltr for Diesel so after talking to a mate of mine I'm now blending Diesel & Veggie Oil (free from local take away) 50/50.
My mate runs 100% Veggie Oil he has two tanks 1 long range tank for the Veggie Oil & the standard tank for Diesel.
He starts up on the Diesel then switches over to the Veggie Oil once the motor is warmed up & switches back a few km's before stopping.
It costs him about $3 to warm up & shut down.
A recent trip of 612km only cost him $3 & he could have traveled a lot further with his long range tank
So this is great for long trips & I may do this after fitting a second tank to the Mudrat.
All it takes is some time to filter the oil, this was a bit messy today as it was the first time I have done this. I will set it all up properly next week.
Went for a drive with the with the oil mix & noticed no loss of power & the exhaust smells a little different now.

I did check it out first No 2 deals with straight oil
There are also two-tank systems which only pre-heat the oil, to make it thinner. You have to start the engine on ordinary petroleum diesel or biodiesel in one tank to warm it up, then switch to SVO in the other tank, and switch back to petro- or biodiesel before you stop the engine, or you'll coke up the engine and the injectors.

There is liimited biodiesel outlets at the moment but they are only 5-10% mix. If you make your own above a certain amount you are meant to pay the excise tax and are meant to conform to emisions as well. Biodiesel is part of the "eco highway" program.

38c per litre. It's taxed on volume not on percentage of price.

Government is under pressure at the moment to reduce the excise tax but there is no way they are going reduce their biggest money spinner.

Over here where I am at the moment (Germany) Biodiesel is commercially available at heaps of big servos, and is 10-15 cents or so cheaper than normal diesel. There are plenty of people in Europe and OZ who have run diesels of WVO - waste vegetable oil, for years with no problems (this has been discussed plenty of times before on OL - SEARCH).
A university/engineering firm did extensive testing for the army on running diesels on vegetable oil (coconut oil). The only downside they found was that on direct injection engines, carbon trumpets would develop around the injectors (but not on indirect). Using injector cleaner regularly should stop this though.

the deal is, you can get done for not using an approved fuel, and tax evasion for not paying exise. three are three main types, straight veg oil, biodeisel and another vege oil form (name?)
straight oil required a deisel start / stop and you need to warm the oil. all that is required to prepare the oil is filter it through paper and then heat to around 70deg c to get rid of moisture.
there are plenty of sites on making fresh and recycled oil biodeisel and WMo just search google, these will outline the proccess and equipment needed. the reason I have not acivly persued making it i i have a fuel card from work for the DD and use the GQ on weekends only so not worth it.
anyone interested I can help out, just PM me or email me your Qs

I only filtered it through an old sheet then through an 100 mesh, then a 120 mesh. I got these from a local ag supplies business in town.
For this batch i placed the mesh over ice cream containers & slowly trickled the oil through the filters the cleaned oil came out of a hole i poked about a third of the way up the ice cream container this allowed for some further settling of finer particles.
I then blended it 50/50 with diesel.
When i make up a plant i will post some pics.

food suppliers sell cloth conical filters that are used to filter the oil for reuse in the fryers, this filter quite fine then allow to settle to ensure no super fine stuff has gotten through and siphon off leaving the bottom bit therelonglux wrote:I only did it as a trial this time but I'm happy with it so i will now build a filter plant.V8Patrol wrote:longlux wrote:Thats how much we should be paying for fuel not a $1.20 a ltrtoughnut wrote:38c per litre. the nylon filter machine filters bags are about $80 dollars. They are designed for alot of use and if you are filtering vege oil they will last you a long, long time. Even longer if your not using it for filtering and refiltering dirty fryer oil. (these aint no cheap paper filters either)
(we sell em where i work)
If anyone is keen for one drop me a PM and ill see what i can do to hook you up with one.
other wise go to a local commercial catering equipment place and buy one.
these would be your best bet for what you guys are planning on doing...

Ive had a gut full too, im going to do this. Longlux does your mate heat the vege oil up in the fuel tank when its cold? I think you need to do this is it congeals in colder temperatures.
Very keen on your write up and pics of your setup, i dont give a fark if its and illegal fuel, if the price of "legal" fuel wasnt so high i wouldnt be doing it.
