GDAY I JUST WONDERING IF ANY ONE OUT THERE HAS ANY PROBLEMS WITH IFS HILUX FRONT DIFFS. I'VE GOT A 98 2.7 PETROL UTE 32 BFG MUDS 2" BODY LIFT 2 " SUS LIFT . I'VE BUSTED MY FRONT DIFF SO I GOT NEW CROWN AND PINION ETC ' GENUINE FROM TOYOTA ' ONCE ALL PUT BACK TOGETHER RUN IT IN AND THEN THE FIRST TIME IN 4WD ON A BUSH TRACK NICE AND EASY 'ONLY TO DO THE SAME THING AGAIN. ANY INFO WOULD BE HANDY . MICKO.
Hey Micko
I have IFS on my 4Runner, and as Ruff said, the best option is to go solid front end.
However, I have found that the three mounts for the diff housing come loose often, and this can make some noise. So get some good rubbers and/or spacers to make fill the gaps in the mounts. This will stop is moving around. It stops some bad vibrations in mine.
Also, check your wheel bearings. If they need to be tightened do it, because for some reason the extra play causes some grinding noise with the drive shaft in the hub assembly.
Check you suspension bushes as well, I am pretty sure they are the reason for a few new really cool noises on my car. I am yet to replace mine, and they need doing, and the noises are only made a flex at the front.
What sort of problem are you having?
Hope that helped!!

Micko where abouts are you?
The swap is fairly complex as nothing bolts straight in yet it can be done fairly easy if you buy basicaly everything from an earlier hilux that had the leaf front end from factory. There are a lot of companies around that could either do the job for you or at least give you some pointers on how to do it if you think you are capable of doing this yourself. There is a lot of welding involved and making bracketry.

Hi,
I use to have a IFS surf and i busted 2 fronts and the 3rd was badly chipped when i sold it!
Good to see you wheel fairly hard!
RUFF is 100% spot on!
The backing plate where the crown wheel bolts onto flexes causeing the crown wheel to also flex!!!! :(
There are 2 ways of fixing this
, but what ever you do DO NOT WASTE ANY MORE MONEY ON TOYOTA FACTORY PARTS, it works out a lot cheaper to go to a wreckers and just buy the whole centre!!
One way of fixxing it is to go LIVE axle as already being suggested, this is a really good set-up but unless you have all the gear to set-it up yourself than expect big$$$$$, i have seen some guys pay $6000.00 to $7000.00
.
Now the other way is a fair bit easier and a lot cheaper and will also improve your off-road ability!!
You need to get a LOCKER that has the backing plate as part of the locker!!!!!
ARB air locker and DETROIT LOCKERS are the ones you will need!!
This eliminates the flex as they are super strong!
The only set back is you will then pop CV's more often when using the locker!!! ( alot cheaper and easier to fix)
The ARB air locker will be a lot better for your application!!
They do now make them for IFS hilux/surf/4 skinner etc etc!
$1200.00 or so for a air locker will soon pay for itself!!!!!!
Cheers!!!!
