lockrite diff questions

Post by delux13 »

How much should I expect to pay for a lockrite diff for an 83 hilux. It's currently got an open 4.875 ratio diff. What sort of places sell them? Is it just a case of changing the centres over or is there more to it than that?

you can get them out of the US for around $400 to your door. a lockright just replaces the spider gears and side gears, you don't even need to take the hemisphere out of the case, it is a fairly easy DIY install.

to buy them here I think there are $700ish?

What do you mean you get what you pay for? Are these no good? What might be a better option that's still not too expensive?

they are quite good value for the money, they do exactly what they are dsigned to do and correctly installed they have been known to last well past 100,000km. However an automatic locker is always a compromise and it will cause changes to the vehicles on-road behavior if installed in the rear. Offroad it will resut in a wider full-lock turning radius whether installed in front or rear, and the side-slope performace in slippery conditions is a bit scary. The only alternatives are the manually operated diff locks (toyota, ARB air locker, Jack Mac/TJM), which are all well over $1000 each and require a more detailed installation, and electronics or an air compressor to operate - the upside of a manual diff lock is there is no compromise - you choose when it's locked or when it's not, and the onroad handling is unchanged. the downside is obviously the cost.

lokka

Post by dubs »

mate I wouldnt fit a 4wd systems lokka.I had one fitted to my 60 series (rear diff) and it worked great for about 6 months then decided to lock up on a main rd which destroyed the diff.I spoke to other people who had the same thing happen.Having said that it could have been fitted incorrectly.
Id fit a genuine one from the states
