Hey guys I just got a 92 feroza and was wonderin,
1) the availability and approx prices of filters and extractors.
2) Also what the better brands would be.
3) How much more power and sound you get from these upgrades and
4) Does anyone have an exhaust system modification and if so what is it and how does it perform?

There are two choices when it comes to your air filter. You can get a drop in replacment type or a POD filer. Both K&N and Unifilter make drop in replacment types with Unifilter being much cheaper. I think that Unifilter ones are around $75.00, K&N ones are a fair bit more. At the mo I'm running a pod type however I wouldn't recommend one of these for off road. Stick to the standard set up as I've lost a fair bit of torque from replacing the standard system.

Thanks man I am in NSW and at the moment I am not doing any offroading just driving around town but i will eventually take it out like on the beach and out bush but not like rock hoppin or nothin I just want to give it a bit more power and make it sound better. So with extractors and a shorter exhaust you loose power? If I was to put like a hotdog exhaust on the end with like an opening of about 4 inches would that loose power aswell? And the pod filters are only good for town driving? You wouldnt go off road with them, is there anything you can get that will work well for both town and off road?
$400 fitted is an alright price. Other people probably got the whole system done at the same time- which would work out cheaper.

Long story short... If you were to run the exhaust straight out the extractors and thats it you wouldn't go too well up hills. If you were to run a 1 inch system! You would rocket up hills. If you wanted to run a hotdog/cannon muffler on the rear I would make sure that you ran a standard 2 inch system from the extractors to a standard sports muffler. This will give you your back pressure. Then from your muffler back you can run what ever size pipe you like.Filoza wrote: So with extractors and a shorter exhaust you loose power? The only reason I find that POD filters aren't great of road is that they aren't protected from the elements. Water/Mud/Dirt can splash strait up into them. So if you use your standard air box and put a drop in replacment in it'll be as protected as can be with pretty much the same performance outcome. Get a drop in replacment if you want a good allrounder for both on and off road.
It's not backpressure you're after- it the max velocity of the exhaust gasses. Too large a pipe size means slow gas flow at low revs and loss of torque. The extractors are supposed to help scavenge the exhaust gasses out of the cylinder (that's how they increase power) and to do that you want a balance between not having back pressure and having the gasses flowing fast.
Even with a 2" exhaust system I noticed a loss of torque at low revs. Basically you'll make more power, but it will all be further up the rev range.

So a standard exhaust with a sports muffler from the extractors and then what ever I want from there on. With this "drop in replacement" air filter what is the go with that is it just a normal air filter or what and wat about prices and availabilty of them. I am not doing any offroading at the moment and I probably wont do alot of it i may only take it on the beach so i will be driving around town alot so i feel the tip or cannon exhaust is just so people will hear it coming and possibly make it a bit quicker.

only 2 options for that, install a new engine that IS quicker, or sell the damn thing. u have the WRONG idea for that feroza....
ur not gonna get much power out of that mighty 1.6l inline 4 cyl engine... likely around a whopping 92 hp!

PV, there is potential in the HD-E.
When fitting extractors and the like you may not increase the maximum power much, but you will change the torque/ power curve and make it more driveable at midrange revs.
Don't forget the same engine in the Detomaso Charade outputs 92kW with a few minor changes. That is a substantial increase in power over the Feroza.

I found this VERY USEFULL page on power upgrades for the feroza (EVEN WITH DYNO CHARTS)

As I am currently considering upgrading the airfilter myself with a K+N pod style..
I have the 'black box' as listed on the site (even though its only a 1990 feroza) and I think ill attach a K+N pod onto the end of part of the stock piping - bypassing the crazy plummery but still a bit away from the exhaust manifold..
MRT looks like the best extractors to go for as I am assuming they have done a bit of research (they also have an air filter kit which i will be looking into)
I hope this helps, It has helped me alot - for me, the low end torque is very important (fuel economy etc)

Ok basically I know that im not going to alot of speed out of this thing but i didnt buy it for speed. I come from newcastle and I dont know if any of you live here or have been here or know where it is but in town is where everyone goes with their "hotted up" cars. Skylines, Supras, Commodores, Corollas, Excels and what ever now I have never seen a feroza in there that is nothing but stockers so all I want to do is make it sound good and grunty and exctractors will help to do that. The cannon on the back will increase the sound. Its not like im gunna go and compete in summernats or anything it is puerly for enjoyment to myself knowing I am the only one there with a moded feroza.

Having just installed a unifilter into mine, i can attest for a nice (albiet small) improvement in performance (the stock filter was pretty grubby though). Doesn't change the 'sound' significantly... but that isn't something that I care greatly about.
The MRT pod should let you hear your roza 'donk' in all it's 1600cc 4cly glory.

I checked out the exhaust shop yesterday, seemed a bit high but he quoted $350 for the extractors, and $390 for the 2" back from there + tip. (not too bad i spose but can shop around thats for sure). Would certainly like to hear how these $170 lukeys go, and i will dont know about the MRT set, seems a few people have had them crack within a short amount of time :/

Don't forget when pricing systems you can get mandrel bends or stainless steel piping and mufflers too.

ok first things first... if you wanna play with making it sound nicer, and perhaps louder... take a screwdriver, and 5minutes... go out to your car.
Remove the intake pipe to the air filter canister, the kidney shaped thing (resonator) that sits on the intake side of the air filter canister.. and the LID off the air filter canister....
Then take it for a drive. (dont forget to floor it in 2nd.. you'll hear what I mean at around 4000rpm)
The kidney shaped thing (resonator) seems to direct the sound back into the air filter box, and if you remove the lid without the resonator being removed also.. you'll find that the dash rattles from the sound (pretty cool though)
go try it and tell me what you think

I've got a complete lukey exhaust system on mine. 4-1 lukey headers, flex joint, hi-flow cat and full 2 1/4 inch sports system. Only cost me $830 (mates rates )
