Need help from Toyota Gurus!!!

I'm half way through my power steer project - 83 HJ47 troopy, 2H, using 40 series box, and standard pump off a 2H ( 60 series) - this has to pass engineering / blue slip (spring over done) and be on the road in 2.5 weeks, so i'm in very much hurry.

Now, lines are sorted, just have to mount reservoir somewhere, BUT, latest problem is FAN - the fan hits the power steer pulley. Is the 60 series fan different? i assume so, would one bolt up to my clutch? or should i just go thermo?

There was a thread on the power steer not long ago, but i don't remember anything about different fans (correct me if i'm wrong), and i also remember someone selling thermo fans??..

Anyhow, does a 60 fan fit or is thermo the best option? what has someone else done?

by how much does it hit? should be possible to space the fan forward a little?

or if you're handy with a dremel or angle grinder, chop a bit off the fan?

yes you need the 60 series fan for clearance and will have to mod the bottom radiatior outlet like the pic below. We used 2 brass elbows and cut the outlet out of an old radiator so we had a joiner and the lip for the hose then silver soldered it all together. If you cant silver solder take it to a radiator shop or get a plumber mate to do it for you. Also for added clearance slot the holes in the chassis for the radiator support panel and move it forward a little bit about 5 or 10mm is all you will need.

I would have to trim around 40mm (or 80 from diameter) to clear, or thin it by about 20mm - i thought a fan had to be balanced? or will a little bit not make a huge difference?

i've done the radiator bottom outlet, it's all good.

If the fan can be a little out-of-balance then i will chop, and maybe get a 60 series one later.

I might chop it i think, then find a 60 series one later - sound like a plan?

its a lot to chop. the balance isn't critical, the fan is pretty light, but it might not move enoug air. a new fan blade is $110ish, or maybe you could get a spacer made up for fairly cheap, any machine shop could whip one up form aluminium in about 20 minutes.

I'll check how much clearance i have to space the the fan forwards - i can make alloy spacers at work to space it forwards. I think the clearance is pretty minimal as it is.

60ser-75ser fan blades will bolt to the original fan clutch they have a
different ofset so it will clear the pulley new non-gen should be $40-$50.

I trimmed mine back - should be ok, for a while, i'll price a 60 or 75 fan or source from a wrecker once car is engineered, just need to get it moving again - very crap working on the troopy in my Dryza-bone in the rain - can't put the nose in the garage cause she can't move till the power steers done!!! ( i could but with alot of hassle)

Power steer belt was fun to get on too. I thought i had a short one (asked for standard), got another and it was way too big, so i squeezed the other on - all good.

Ok, power steer is now working, (still have to make proper mount for reservoir) when sitting still with 35's, it turns to the left easy, but steer right, once just a bit past center to the right it becomes hard to turn - as soon as you move it's easy again, just hard when sitting still.
Any ideas?
