TD42 wont start **URGENT** again...........
its a GU patrol with a td42, the starter moter spins and it sounds like its throwing out, but the engine wont turn over. It has been sitting since last sunday and hasnt been cleaned since some mud crossings. but i havent had a problem untill now...........any ideas, i wanted to go wheeling tomorow

If it's spinning up but not engaging it would most likely be one of two things. Get a hammer and tap the solenoid on the starter motor and it should engage or there are teeth missing on your fly wheel or starter gear or the gear has sheared the locating lug. Try tapping the solenoid first, I'd say that's your problem. Its just rusted up a bit from sitting.

Yeah. You'll shear the locating lug first.

thanks dumdance, i had to try out the new STT's.........i hope i dont need a replacement. do they sell starter moters at crazy clarksdumbdunce wrote:auto or manual?
get the starter motor off and hose out the bellhousing through the starter hole, to get any mud out of there.
bench test the starter to make sure it is through the gear out etc - might just need a wash down.
stay out of mud,mmmkay?
they do but they are cheap chinese knockoffs that will only last 2 - 3 starts.mickyd555 wrote:thanks dumdance, i had to try out the new STT's.........i hope i dont need a replacement. do they sell starter moters at crazy clarksdumbdunce wrote:auto or manual?

I reckon of you tried you could get a TD42 starter this arvo if you need one, (isn't it the same as TB42??) there must be a dozen people on this board in bris with a spare one lying around.

rip the starter right off and bench test it..mickyd555 wrote:ok, it wont go, should i try clutch starting it first or just rip the starter off???
if i should be ripping the starter off, i can only see 3 bolts. if i undo them will it come straight off or do i need to do something else aswell??
if you're desperate to go wheeling.. - clutch start it and go for a quick drive with a plastic plate over the starter motor hole and learn to drive it without stalling
I lasted a whole day on a burnt starter motor on my 2.8 which was removed and an ice cream carton cut up to cover the hole with bolts on it.
Drove 8 hours offroad in tamborine tracks (light to medium) no serious hardcore shiat... but....
my mates 80 series shit its gearbox and i towed it home all the way from tamborine (near ormeau) to paradise point (gold coast) without stalling
takes practice
the new starter was ready to be picked up a few days later.. but didnt stop the clutch from shittin itself a month later and the whole engine binned for a 4.2 turbo diesel and new box
yeh, so to just check, all i have to do is undo the three bolts and she will come off??GQ wrote:rip the starter right off and bench test it..mickyd555 wrote:ok, it wont go, should i try clutch starting it first or just rip the starter off???

ive never had to take a starter off b4.........
yep plus a big fat wire and a little skinny wire. disconnect the battery before you start playing with it.mickyd555 wrote:yeh, so to just check, all i have to do is undo the three bolts and she will come off??GQ wrote:rip the starter right off and bench test it..mickyd555 wrote:ok, it wont go, should i try clutch starting it first or just rip the starter off???

i bench tested the bitch. it turns and throws out but only about 10mm or so. does this sound healthy???
10mm seems a bit short. it has to throw out at least the width of the ring gear plus the clearance between the ring gear and the starter spur gear when the spur gear is retracted. a bit of vernier caliper action should get you an idea of how far it should throw out.
gregory's manual does not show how far the gear should protrude when energised.
you should be able to see into the bellhousing to see if the ring gear is damaged.

Clean it all up (throwout mechanism etc) and get rid of any grease and dirt. Then lubricate it all with silicon spray, or nothing at all. Grease attracts dirt and causes more problems than it's worth.
I was given that tip by a guy who rebuilt them for a living. Had to put it into practice on my Feroza starter motor two years ago and it's been running perfectly since

30mm sounds better.mickyd555 wrote:ok, i fixed her.............she's throwing out about 30mm now.
before i put it back in, dumdance said to clean out the bellhousing. should i just stick a hose in where the starter goes. and if i do this, should it come out the bottem or will i have to let it dry out overnight????
yeah just hose out the bellhousing, if it has a plug in the bottom, pull it out so the junk can drain out.

i wish, i got the starter back in and it didnt start. i thought i mighta drained the battery a bit while i was bench testing.........or should i say on the spare tyre testing. so i rolled her down the driveway, started it and took it for a run. it didnt start again after that, so i think i might have to look at the connection on the stater itself (which im over, so ill look at it in the morning.) it does click but no go at all this time........Sir Rollsalot wrote:Is this just some miserable excuse to avoid coming out to ormeau tommorrow micky.....soooooffft coooooocck
thanks to everyone for there help, much appreciated
yeh dude, its all conected right. something clicks but im not sure what.......im just about to go have another look at it now, just thought id pop on here and see if anyone had any more ideas for me...........Woop wrote:Can you actually hear the solenoid clicking when turning the key? td42 starters arnt expensive to have an auto lekky check it out...mickyd555 wrote:ok, it died again...............![]()
same problem again, click, click......nothing. damn thing, ill have to try and get it out again and see. someone suggested brushes, so ill have to look at that. i got out of the electric moter industry cause i hate this shit........
my starter for the 2.8 (rd28t) in the GQ was 300 to fully rebuild after shittin the spring load clutch inside it..
td42s are different if i remember.. and would be cheaper.
