More Water-resistent stereo?

Hey there,

Seeing that my truck will be 7 months topless, and year-round in the desert where the sand particles have no mercy, I was thinking of going with a standard marine stereo in the dash with a hidden single CD slot, all this to power the stock 4 speakers...

I want music, not an Orchestra, so quality may come second to purchasing ONCE and forall and washing with water being splashed when necessary...

Do you think by going with a marine rated unit would do the trick? if yes, any recommendations? What are the buggy people running?

@ the buggy people..... i suppose the full bodied buggies may have a music deck or two...

marine unit will do the trick i think, its a box like enclosure which you put your own deck inside it and its concealed against water etc and flip the front open to change stations/cds etc.

I had a removable marine radio-cassette inside one of those flip-top housings in a topless Suzi, with a pair of marine speakers under the roll bar. I had it mounted vertically between the front seats, so it sort of worked like an armrest, but I had to be real careful trying to adjust anything in the rain.

Whenever I left the vehicle the stereo either went with me, or into a locked box in the back.

As a suggestion why not just purchase or use an existing walkman or MP3 player with headphones, you can get adaptors that would take two sets of phones for passengers. Rechargeable batteries are the go.

If it rains you just stick it under your coat.
No sand will be able to get in either.

They have built in joggle these days so that will stop the skipping.

Or the MP3 player can be used with all the downloaded songs. Some have FM radio built in.

I'd go with a marine grade cd/radio. Will cost a little extra.

But why not put the stereo in the glovebox where it's hidden? I did this on my datto 1200 ute when I bought a stereo that was worth 1/2 what the car was.

I had the impression that the vehicle was going to be a desert dweller and not a road vehicle, but in any case you put one earbud in your ear and leave one out.

As for safety is that really a factor? He has no roof on his vehicle and he is located in Lebanon! Is having an earbud in your ear that much of a problem in that environment.

Also you can attach a remote speaker to these devices. He said he didn't want an orchestra only music.

I think this would save him money and the worry of sand and water damaging his unit.

I recant my original suggestion of using ear buds. I nearly killed myself crossing Bridge Road Richmond today. Had the FM radio on with the ear buds firmly planted. I didn't hear the tram rumbling along to my left.
Saw it at the last moment after the driver sounded the bell. Luckily the driver saw me first. New suggestion , spend your money on the water proof stereo. You will live longer.

Memo to me, use the pedestrian crossing.

I know this is supposed to be in the Chit chat but it does flow from the original thread. Stereo is safer.

What about a sealed FM/AM Marine Grade stereo.
Then get an iPod, and the FM transmitter AirPlay plug in. That way the iPod sits in your pocket, and the stereo plays the songs from the iPod, through the FM frequency, no wires.....

Perhaps just plan to replace it every 12 months, getting stolen could also be a major problem in Lebanon I guess.
I used to always have at least a bikini top over myself anyway to prevent being lobsterised, it also kept the stereo dry. If I had the top off I'd roll it up on the top edge of the windscreen and hang it down over the dash when parked.
