cb aerial

I bought a Uniden 27mhz CB radio off ebay a little while ago, and although I'm not quite ready to put it in my rig yet (making a roof console for it) I thought I might as well get the aerial in and ready to go.

Does it really matter what sort of antenna I get (obviously as long as its 27mhz), like would this one be ok?

$20, should be good, I can't be fucked to pay through the ass for one. Thats a 6 foot, and once I tune it, it won't be nearly that long.

There is also a 3 foot one from Jaycar, what would be the difference between the 3ft and 6ft?

I bought a an Cobra AM radio from ebay too. Went to Telstat in Carrum Downs in Vic and bought a 5 foot GME electrophone 5 foot arial for 45 dollars.

They told me that it was pre tuned and advised to go that way than a cheaper one they sold (durability) Yet to fit it all.

A better quality aerial is good - btu I cant find mine so im running a $13 cheapie.

The cheapies break just as easilly as the "name brand" units....

I run a $130 UHF ariel and its been broken around 6 times now and it costs me about $40 to "fix" it after each breakage.....
The CB ariel cost me $13 @ supercheap and its out lasted the other more expensive "Electrophone" jobs........... so far anyway !

Thanks guys. I figured if it breaks, its cheap as chips to replace, AND its only a CB aerial, so like there won't be that much difference between a no-name and a name brand.

I reckon I'll give the Jaycar a go......how do I go about tuning it? Cheers.

The quality from cheap to expensive does differ. Also different types of aerials provide different types of coverage. Your best bet is to talk to a salesman who can advise you on the best solution for your usage

I have got two arials lying around, how do i tell which is a 'good' one and which is not. alos whats this buisness about tuning (I don't know much about radios)

tuning was done in the older times when arials werent pre-tuned........nowdays they all are...... i used to sell a mixture of cheap and good.....basiclly good ones had better reciption and clarity than a cheapie.
a good aireal in the rite area can travel just as far as uhf...if not more:)

get a whip style so if ya do hit stuff it has a better chance of suriving...u can get a spring base to if ya like.

GME/Electrophone are both good...undien as well.

keep a cheapie for a spare if ya brake the good one!

With my 'cheapie' 27meg aerial i can usually get several klm. But i've got a monster with an adjustable steel tip that's almost 8ft long and that puppy gets no less than 10+ klm on a bad day. I think 30klm was it's best... and that's on a ute, not a base station! It's too big to fit to the jeep
