Lift Kit in an 80 series

Just about to put a lift kit in the 80..
Very new to 4WDing, we bought a 91GXL turbo diesel.
After some fun in the bush, have decided to make some changes.
Need more clearance, so have decided on the Tough Dog lift Kit with in car adjustment, and a set of 33 or 35 muddies.
The mrs drives it daily so has to be gentle enough for her too.
Bascally looking for input or advice from anybody on the do's and don'ts regarding the lift. Looking at either 4 or 5 inch lift.
What are the usual problems or extra work that I will need to do that won't be supplied in the kit. Have heard a few stories on wobbles, brake issues etc..
Its an all wheel drive too, the transfer case is a future thought, mainly for the $$$$ of doing everything at once.

don't go over 4" with the all wheel drive - any more is asking for driveline vibrations from the short front tailshaft. The tough dog 4" kit is good and fairly complete, they should give you the option of caster bushes or caster plates, take the plates. if you are installing yourself, the plates are easier to install and give you more caster correction than the bushes - they require a little bit of trimming from the axle leading arm mounting brackets but it's nothing that can't be achieved with an angle grinder or a hacksaw/file if you are patient.

with 4" (even 5 - 6", with some conditional qualifiers) there is no need to extend brake lines.

any lift over 15mm (altough 2" appears to be acceptable) requires engineering approval, as does any tyre diameter increase of over 15mm, so to make sure your truck is legal, it must be inspected and approved by an automotive engineer. This might require some additions to the kit, fpr example front bumpstop extensions.

lastly it's worth noting that a tyre size increase and a suspension lift will result in a negative impact on your fuel economy - probably in the order of about 10% for 35's and 4" lift.

the 4" complete tough dog lift is engineerable, as brian said go the castor plate, and make sure you get the complete kit with the panhards as wel for engineering sake. PM me with the price you have and I will try to beat it for you :D

ASK QUESTIONS, LOTS OF QUESTIONS. if your patient enough you can source all the parts yourself like i did. it may mean you have to wait for the next show for the best prices but i save about $1200 bucks that way, its just a bit more stuffing around. I put a 5in lift in my 80's so the money i saved initally has been used to sort out subsequent steering issues but i dont regret it 1 bit. PM me if you want a heads up on where i got my deals from if your interested but remember this - the bigger you go the harder you play and the MORE YOU PAY.

Marks adaptors has a kit to modify the transer to part time. I think it around $600 with free wheeling hubs.

U can put a double cardon joint in the front tail shaft which stops the vibs..

I run 7-8" under my 80 which is still fulltime 4wd and I get no vibs at all...

I too went with the double cardon.
worked fine. 6 inch lift

Thanks for the advice so far. Well, went for the complete tough dog 5 inch lift(ouch$).
My mates has just been done, mine will get done in a couple of weeks when time permits.
What did you guys use with the sway bars falling short of their mounting plate?
Also would like to get ready for mine to be done. Any hints on where to get the double cardon front shaft?

The next one....INSURANCE! Who uses what company??
nrma won't have a bar of anything over 2" !
Would like to obviously cover mods and accessories.

NOw i dont run themn at all tho.. just run the shocks on 9 :D

i'm with just cars, they will let you do anything to your car, as long as it is still legal, and your rate won't go up, all the other companys wouldn't have a bar of the bundy.

TCIS wouldnt touch my tow car (80 series with 6" lift) as CGU (who underwrite the policy) even tho in a club and have 65% protected no claim, thought 6" is too high,funny thing is aus 4WD insurance will insure it and they are alos underwritten by CGU.

Dont really think GIO would be real happy with 4+ inches of lift....

they didnt have aproblem with my 40.
only thing was i had to wait til i was over 25.

GIO arnt happy if it is anything but standard.... 4wd insurance will insure it, but if its not engineered, thats your fault sir..we r not covering your claim...just like the rest will do.
