Painting Coil Springs

Post by Jeeps »

Just wondering what kind of paint should be used when painting coil springs so the flex won't flake or crack it once dried. Just plain black is all i want to paint them.

Cheers

What about an idea I thought of a little while back.

Go to an electrical wholesale place ( Tandy - Dicksmiths - etc) and get some heat shrink big enough to fit over the spring, Its plastic, comes in heaps of colours, you should be able to slide it over your coils and shrink it on..

I have never tryed it, but will have a go one day.

Powder would be to hard and would crack and flake off. Try a spray can just dont put on to thick if it dont last you have only wasted a few bucks

I used to work as a gun operator in a Powder Coating company. Have done hundreds of sets of coils and have never had a come back. The Surface of a coil spring wouldnt change much if any durring compression or extension so it shouldnt effect paint.

i sort of assumed that coils were probably powdercoated from the factory. if i was ever to paint mine powdercoating would be my option, and i have been quoted $15 a kilo for powdercoating a fence, id assume the same price for coils

Its all in the preperation. the boring but most important part if you want it to stay stuck. get rid of all traces of dirt and sand back till no shiny surface is visable. you could even consider using that additive thats applied b4 painting glass if your paranoid (i forget what its called). :D

I think you will find that most, if not all, coils are powdercoated from the factory.

Thanks for the replies guys. As it turns out, the secondhand OME coils i have (only 500klm on them ;) ) are already black and all Old Man Emu coils are powdercoated. Thanks again :D
