4SPD+ V8 in MQ
4SPD+ V8 in MQ
Hey guys was considering putting in a v8 but rather than going to the hassel of putting it in with a 5spd was wondering wether it would still be okay with the original 4 spd. Im concerned that it might be revving its box off at 110kph and cost me a fortune to run. Anyone had any experience with this sort of combo??

running it with the 4 speed will still be ok.
i had a 4 speed in mine for about 4 months before i went to 5 speed.
putting the 5 speed in while doing the V8 conversion is very veyr easy and reuquires no extra mods to fit.
if u use a 4 speed and later want to go to 5 speed u will have to change things over like engine mounts, hose lengths, fan shrouds etc etc
but if planning on permanantly running 4 speed, at least for the forseeable future..... yeh wont have any dramas.
mine was fine.

in the 4 speed mine was sitting about 2800rpm.... on 35's
which i thought wasnt too bad considering by GQ TB42 is sitting at 2500 rpm on 33's at 110 also.....
now it sits at 2200 rpm on 38s with speed.....

mine must be totally shagged then...... it spends a great deal of its life at or above 3500 when "offroad mode" is deployed.....
A very comfortable 2800 @ 100KPH is normal ( NB the 100kph is GPS tested not as per what the speedo says )
most carbied V8s are set to run around 3000RPM and around 2000rpm for the newer injected V8s ...... examples....
HQ-HZ series holdens ran a shade under 3000RPM @ 100kph,
while the newer injected donks.....
VN - VS etc etc run generally around the 2000RPM mark.
maybe I'm just a really heavy footed driver...... what do you recon Jeff ???

Okay so if i go for a 308 AND it has to be a blue motor according to law and i bolt it to my original 4 spd i can expect it to do around 3000rpm at around 100 to 110kph.
IF i kept it on straight petrol would this end up costing me a fortune to run?? My guess it would, im only guestimating but would fuel consumption be around the 5 kms per ltre mark???
ALSO it cost around $2000 to $2500 to put a fourby on gas over here, is it that difficult to buy one out of the quokka ( trading post ) and install it urself??
Thanks guys

fuel economy on petrol will be very bad.
needs to be on gas, and if its on gas it doesnt matter if its a red motor blue motor ir black motor 308, as long as its straight LPG.
with regards to the LPG, the price is much cheaper over here to buy the kit as kingy says maybe 500 for a decent kit, second hand....
installing it urself, yeh u could do it, u may have some trouble with the finer points but im sure we could talk i through it no dramas

Maybe 300 to 400 RPM tops.....Shark wrote:Just trying to weigh up all my options and then start collecting. Doesnt seem like a big difference in revs between the 4 and 5 spd at 100kph??!
Marc
the main benefit of 5 speed is the far lower first gear for offroad crawl ability as MQ hasnt got rock hoppers available.

My car's uses in a nutshell.
80% on road
20% beaches and gravel/dirt tracks.
So if thast the case then the 4spd should be okay.
Hey write us up a rough shopping list( If you have the time)

As Jeffricals said the main reason is for the lower 1st gear so its easier to run 35"s up to 38"s and still have some ability to crawl.
5th gear is a rare pleasure and I only use it on the "open road" ( up around 120 kph + )
Shopping list.......
V8 motor
V8 addaptor bellhousing drilled to suit both chev & trimatic patterns
V8 holden flywheel & pressure plate
1999 model injected diesel motor clutch plate
L28 clutch fork ( preferably with NEW master n slave cylinders )
Things that will need to be modded or custom made....
Radiator ------ modded
engine fan ---- modded
cowl ---- custom
wiring ---modded
other bits you probably havent thought of ......
zorst system .....new one !
thermo fan .... 16" davis craig

LPG stuff......
tank to fit where the fuel tank is currently located......
tank to fit beside the rear drive shaft
hydrostatic valve to join the 2 tanks
flexy line for filler + filler itself
flexy line from tanks to engine bay
LPG lockout valve
LPG converter
5/8 heater hoses to reach from motor to converter
Mixer to suit the carby on the motor
One LPG guage
one safety switch ( read expensive relay with a little LED light in it )
a few clamps, screws etc
& around one w/end for you n a couple of mates to do the V8 conversion.......
& around another w/end to install the LPG stuff
& atleast 3 slabs per w/end to insure mates turn up
