GU Patrol 3.0 Clarification

Post by dieseldude »

OK, I had a quick search but couldn't find much.

What I need to know is when exactly did the problems with the early GU 3.0's get rectified.

What series is deemed to be safe from motors blowing up due to the oil feed issue?

Looking at upgrading the 4.2 diesel GQ for a 3.0TD.

Much appreciated.

I'm not keen to stick with the 4.2 as it doesn't tow my bike trailer and boat trailer as good as previously expected. Don't get me wrong, it has torque but a turbo one would be much better.

My old man has a 3.0TD GU '02 model and it hauls trialers no worries at all.

Plus, time for an upgrade before the GQ starts getting too old. Otherwise I would just spend 3 grand on a turbo for it.

Sorry, let me clarify.

Why dont you but the GU 4.2 turbo.

I've owned a 3.0 and 4.2. I'd prefer the 4.2.
Get a 3" exhaust, turbo and fuel adjustment and you gain about 20kw.

I towed a cabin cruiser over 4 hours and it was overtaking slower cars uphill. Had plenty of power.

Don't outrule the 4.2 turbo until you've done all your homework.

Right.

I've got a 4.2 N/A GQ at present and want to upgrade it.

Realistically, the 4.2 TD GU's are too expensive still and for comparable money or even cheaper, I can get a 3.0TD GU which is newer.

This is where I'm coming from when I ask for advise on the 3.0TD GU's

I'm sure a 4.2 Turbo GU will be awesome and reliable, but given the cheaper rego of a 4 cylinder and such, I figure it'll be a better bet.

Also, the 4.2 turbo's are pretty rare to find i've found.

Cheers

You're right. 4.2s are scarce in series IIIs. The 3.0 is much more common, performs the same and is $7k cheaper. I have a 2004 3.0 Series III with 92,000kms on it and have towed a 2.7tonne boat around Oz with it. Never had any problems. Seems like all the problems are fixed.

Wasnt the main change the size of the sump? The problem ones had a 5 litre sump which was upped to 8 litres.

Either drain the sump into a bucket at the dealers yard ;) or check the handbook.

Fair enough.

But make sure you go for the series 3 as mentioned they should be okay.

Also for further comfort you can buy an extended warranty from
Nissan.

Parts for the 3.0 are more expensive and the rego costs are the same between the 3.0 and 4.2.

The 4.2 is harder to find and can cost more, so if anything Insurance on the 3.0 will also be cheaper.

The rego costs are not the same for the 3.0 and the 4.2. The 3.0 is a 4 cyl and the 4.2 a 6 cyl. There is approx. $100 between them.

Sorry 4by. I didn't realise that you are in Vic and that 4'2 and 6's are the same rego. What's it worth for curiousity?

What was the thing that you noticed wrong for the faulty air flow sensor and what was the fix?

That price includes everything, nothing more to pay.

TAC Premium - $339.00
