Hi,
Sometime back, I asked if anyone knew whether the 23 spline mitsubishi input had the same spec as the jeep 23 spline input.
At the time no one knew and I wondered if someone does now.
I have posted in the jeep section asking if anyone in my area has a unit on the floor so, maybe I can check myself.
The thing is that if they are the same it may open up tranfer case options, such as new process or even atlas and really get some low gears happening.
What do you recon?
Regards, Al.

Hi Allan, I can indeed confirm that the Mitsu 23 spline (auto) output shaft will mate to a Jeep NP231 transfer case.
One of the guys on Trail Talk had a Mitsi 4 sp auto (KM148) and a spare NP231 and it was almost a perfect fit. The bolt pattern is even the same.
The only problem is the input gear on the NP231 is a few mm too long so the two mounting surfaces won't touch for bolting up.
It can be solved by taking a few mm off the NP 231 input gear so the surfaces will make contact.
I believe a 4 sp KM148 (Gen 1 auto) or a Gen 2 V6 V4AW2/3 4 sp auto will work with a NP231 (same bolt patterns) by shaving some off the NP231 input gear.
Remember the Mitsu 5sp boxes are all 24 spline right up to the 3.5 V6 / 2.8 TDI's which used a different & much larger box which had a 27 spline output shaft so all the Mitsi manual boxes are not compatible.
I also believe that there are 2 sizes of input gear for the NP231 a long and a short but I'm not sure which one this guy had.
It's definitely worth investigating as you can get Tera 4:1 gearsets for the NP231

I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
good news
Bitsamissin,
Thanks, you sure seem to have the low down on lots of info.
Since these 23 spliners are the same then that would mean the atlas would also be adaptable. Only problem may be clearance of the left torsion bar(this goes for the NP231 also) but moving the motor trans to the right may solve even that hurdle.
Thanks and regards, Al
