there is no such engine as the 3LT... someone's having you on (as far as i know)

you can buy the 2.8 Litre engine and put an aftermarket turbo on it like thousands of others, but i think the engine you want is the 3 - litre turbo engine, which is called the <dumbdunce fill this spot in>

Currently you will have the 2L diesel moter (2.4L), there is a 3L which 2.8L & a 5L which is a 3.0L engine. Neither the 3L or the 5L came fatory turbo charged like the 2LT was. (As a side line a 2LT is not just a 2L with a turbo, there are a few minor differences)

So your options would be to bolt a 3L or 5L in which is a direct bolt up no changes required at all & then turbo charge it. However you will be looking at anywhere between $3-5000 for a good motor then another $2500-3000 for the turbo kit. The downside here apart from cost is that you are now turbo charging a motor that was never designed to accept it.

The better option would be the factory turbo's. There are 2 that Toyota do. I is a direct injection 3L which is in the new Hilux & the other came out in the last hilux & prado models.

Dumbdunce really would be the best person to give you engine codes & how easy/hard they are to bolt up.

Isn't there a 3 litre turbo diesel that comes in a surf as well as a 2.4 turbo? That is factory turbo isn't it?

If your running a 2L engine at the moment the engines which will bolt in directly are the 2.8 3L and the 3.0 5L. The former 2 are not factory turbo and I would question whether the engines can actually stand a turbo.

Another engine, found in Surfs and some LC's is the 1KZ-TE, a 3litres engine with a little awesome power. 1KZ has a factory fitted turbo.

If you are running a 2L engine now, chances are your gearbox is G40 or G52. These gearboxes will not stand up to the power of a turbo, well they will function, but not for very long. The gearbox you should aim for is the R151 series.

Have you considered a 2LT engine, a little more power than a 2L, but will fit directly onto your existing gearbox.

Yes there is but it is not a 5L motor.

After doing a bit of goggling I came up with:

1KZ-T:
4-cyl.in-line OHC,
88kw @ 3600 rpm
290N.m. @ 2400 rpm

They also make a 1KZ-TE with an electronic fuel pump

And also at 3 litres in capacity is turbo diesel fitted to the new hilux:

The 1KD-FTV engine is a 3.0 litre four cylinder turbo-charged and inter-cooled engine, also with a 16-valve DOHC configuration. Maximum power is 120 kW at 3 400 r/min and peak torque of 343 Nm is delivered between 1 400 r/min and 3 200 r/min.

Hope this helps.

The 1KD was only released a few years ago and is the new version of the 1KZ. The 1KD would be exoensive.

I have heard rumours that the surfs like blowing heads??.. But i 2lt sounds simple and easy. all i want is a bit more towing and highway power. The 2l in it has already been everywhere where i wanted it to go but as i said lacks highway and towing power..
Neone know where to get 2lt motors...want complete rebuilt one!

The 2LT is renouned for blowing heads not the 1KZ. Both maybe found in the Surfs.

If you just want a little more power I would suggest a 3l or 5l, non turbo, and a straight swap.

For 2LT you see here:
