Hilux 4Y to Supra conversion
Hava a 86 d/cab 4Y 2.2 hilux 5 speed and am sick of no power.
I've done some reading on the supra conversion and would like to confirm the best engine and bell housing combo.
Any help would be great.

whats your budget?
in decreasing order of cost=
7mgte for turbo power - 230hp 240nm
7mge - 190hp 185nm
or older lesspowerful but cheaper 5mge - 160hp 170nm
get a new heavy duty clutch when doing this conversion as my clutch has given it up with the lowly 5mge powering it.
other engines you could look at are the 1gge 1ggte 1ggze etc.
i did the 5mge conversion for around 1500 in TOTAL. including all the stuff like cable ties, new hoses etc.

hi
im doing the same swap.
i have choosen a 7mge, because i have a g52 tranny (u should have that one to) and a turbo would kill it to quick
til now i have payd 400€ for everthing, i only need some cables and hoses. this swap is realy cheap!!
in 2 weeks i will drop the 7m in, and than i can confirm if the bellhousing fitts like everyone says

Those torque figures are probably supposed to be in ft/lb.
Another engine to consider is the 2JZGE which is 168kW 3L I6. It will cost around $1000. They are normally in front of the W58 transmission so the bellhousing should bolt onto the G52. If not then you could consider changing the G52 for a W56 but im not sure whther or not this is possible at the transfer case end.

The 2JZ uses the R154 tranny which has a longer input shaft compared to the R150 / 151 used in the lux. For simplicity the 5M is easy !! although in Oz the 7M Cressida is pretty common, just the bellhousing becomes the issue.
Have seen an adapter for the A340 auto bellhousing from a Cressida that hocks up to either the W56, G53 or R series box !!
Good luck
Oh yeah another secret, with minor mods you can use the Y series flywheel on a 5M / 7M ..........cool eh !!

Mike, doesn't the 2JZ-GE come with a W58? I'd presume the 2JZ-GTE would come with a R154...
Will 5M-GE motor mounts fit a 2JZ-GE?
What type sump does the 2JZ-GE come with, forward, mid, or rear?
What kind of adapter is available to hook the R151F or R150F to the 7M-GE using the A340 automatic bellhousing? What does one do for a clutch and actuation of the clutch?

2JZ-GE comes with W58
2JZ-GTE comes with Getrag V160 or V161 6 speed
2JZ-GE is mainly found in the soarer and supra so id say nearly 100% of them would be rear sump. However the 1JZ front sump is interchangeable but hard to find as they are used by all the MX83 cressida and MA61 supra 1J conversions.

Well I know I can attach a W56 to a W58 bellhousing.
I reckon to use a R151F I'd need a Dellow or Castlemaine bellhousing. I thought I'd read some of the turbo JZ engines used a R154 gearbox. Maybe it was the 1JZ-GTE.... Regardless, even if that were true and the bellhousing fits a 2JZ-GE block, the R154 gearbox's input shaft is 190mm whereas the R151F and R150F's are 160mm. Nuts!
A rear sump is perfect for a 4x4 IFS vehicle. No starvation of the main bearings on an incline, nor interference with the front diff.

It's a little rough but no big deal.
Dellow service can be pretty pathetic so everyone then bad mouths their stuff.
The only problem I had was that the dellow supplied thrust bearing carrier was to small ID to fit over my input shaft, I had to machine some out. I suppose these things shouldnt happen and this is why the get bad mouthed.
I used the 2LT rubbers and made new plates out of aluminium from the 1J to the 2LT rubber.

hi before i went back to suzukiu's i did this conversion on my 88 hilux, it was a few years ago now but basicalli i had the sme 2.2 hilux the supra manual gearbox bell houseing bolts striaght onto the origainal hilux box. i used the supra flywhhel and hi lux heavy duty clutch, i used the 2.8 5m-ge supra lump.engine mounts had to be moved forward the sump was fine. electrics for the injection system was a bit of a nightmare but if i remember correctly i ernded up with a loom of about 10 wires. i was running 33" tyres and standard gearing and althogh the clutch copped fine it was too high geared, pulled 90 MPH in 3rd gear but 5th was too tall. apart from that it was a good easy conversion and the truck was blinding after with loads of low down tourque. not sure the turbo would be the way to go but you wqill love the power when youve finished

hey. i'm looking to upgrade my 2.8 diesel, its a 89 model single cab.
pardon my ignorance but the 7mge, is it a staright six or what??? and what kind of cost are you looking at to buy one, presumably a half cut, whatever conversion i do i was going to run a microtech computer, they come with about 5 meters of wiring loom so it shouldn't be too hard to wire it.
