Garage Air Compressor
I've currently looking for an air compressor for my garage - The main uses I envisiage are:
Repainting my CJ5 & Willys wagon rigs as part of their rebuilds.
Herculiner application to the TJ and the above 2.....
Rattle gun - becuase I have two sets of tyres for the TJ it seems like I'm always spinning the wheel brace...
And an air wrench - just to make things generally faster & easier.
Oh yeah and to power a nail gun as I'm currently building an extension to our house.....(just starting)....
I have found one that seems to be a reasonable cost, it 15CFM, 80L tank and 3hp....it does however require a 15amp plug and that means some re-wiring....so would you think it's ok for the above? too little? too much? etc....
I'm interested as to any specific features I should look for, things to be careful of etc.....

WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T BUY A DIRECT DRIVE COMPRESSOR THEY ARE NO WHERE AS GOOD AND RELIABLE AS A BELT DRIVE AND THEY ARE DAMN NOISY WHEN RUNNING. A MATE HAS AN 18 CFM AND HE IS ALWAYS PAINTING CARS AND HE SAID HE NEVER RUNS OUT OF AIR. BIGGER IS BETTER IF YA CAN AFFORD IT.

Was looking on the weekend & the wife was telling me to buy a 2½hp with 59L tank - but at 12CFM I thought it was a bit small....
the 3.0HP 80L was v engine DIRECT drive....It's also been mentioned to me that an oiled version is better (NFI how much more $$$ though)....& NFI if the one I was looking at was oiled.....
Edit- the above unit was DIRECT drive not belt driven as I initally thought...

12CFM will be fine for painting if you havre a big enough tank. 59l will probably be OK if you are just using normal suction guns, you'll run out of paint in the pot before the tank drops below your line pressure.
You can spray with an 8cfm compressor without a worry If you have a big enough tank. The rattle gun and stuff will be fine, the worst tools for chewing through air are the continuous demand things like pneaumatic drills, grinders, sanders, etc....

I,ve had a 12CFM and 2x 15 CFM and if you going to use airsanders or anything like that spend the bit extra and get a 3 cylinder not just a 2 cylinder sometimes the 2 cylinders won,t keep up with the amount of air your using the tank size dont count for jack if the compressor pump cant even keep up with what your using

You can always BOOTIE FAB an extra tank out of on old gas tank or go to a truck wreckers a get there old air tanks that they use for their air bags,to easy i knew a bloke who had three in sequence ran fine ( looked a bit sheit though). :wink:
P.S If u do this remember to put a pressure release valve on her.

Funny thing is now I'm looking at the trading post & I'm looking at bigger & better compressors .....
The lead runner is a 17cfm 80L 240V 15Amp belt driven inc 3x10M hose, and some tools (drill, sander, grinder & multi tool(?)) 3months old $1000....Aparentlty from a broke polishing business and the guy paid $1500....

It sounds like the one I have 8)
Mine is that exact configuration, brand name is peerless. If that one is the same go for it, mine has run flawlessly for about 8 years now. For quite a bit of that time it was dragged on and off a ute everyday as well.

You will never be able to paint with a 8cfm . It will look like crap.A 12 cfm will probably be an 8 or 10 geared up Don,t go any thing under a 15cfm. .Mine ,s a 20 cfm 2hp motor paid $600 11 years ago second hand never touched it. an all I do is paint cars
