not sure why you would undertake this expensive conversion. Machining costs alone would probly scare you away. Can find the 4.8 version complete with ecu at most wreckers here in vic as they are not as popular as the diesels. If you do not know very much about efi almost all the work will be carried out by a workshop, pretty expensive and to get the most from your "old engine" you will need aftermarket managment injectors etc etc. You are better off doing somthing like the bloke in this forum who just completed a turbo conversion on his 4.2 petrol, makes 165kw at the wheels on an internallly standard engine. Good luck anyway.
I really thought while rebuiding the 4.2 I might as well 'upsize'.
Will be getting parts at trade price so not too worried about cost. Have rebuilt the engine in previous MQ with no probs so Im confident ill go ok with a tb42. Will take it somewhere for a tune though
It has to be a cheaper and more reliable option than dropping in a 2nd hand v8, also less hassle as i wont need to get it engineered.
Also, If i was to turbo, i would still need/want to rebuild the engine. I figure machining, crank and rods would have to be cheaper than manifold,new/reco turbo,IC and plumbing
Will chase some prices on a runner from the wreckers though
fawk that u can buy my engine outta my ute for $8000 :p TD42 with hiflowed t3 turbo and intercooler and modded injector pump and fresh injectors

suppose the 4.8 is a little expensive LoL.
I suppose you just got to decide what power level u are chasing, if its anywhere up to 250kw which is heaps in a fourby you simply dont need to spend big money when it comes to nissans, blokes are turboing TB42s with nearly 200k on them just using a diesel exhaust manifold (strait fit) and the efi manifold. Conversely im turboing the 3.0 petrol in mine having helped a few mates with theirs they are all happy with the 150-170kw @wheels, and this is with conservative boost and very high-mile engines. These engines are all standard internally and naturally aspirated compression ratios. Im seriously looking into turboing a 4.2 as its just too easy not to do, and that is a big turbo petrol engine in anyones book perfect for a heavy patrol.
