HJ75 Shock Absorber advice

Post by pridhac »

Howdy folks,

I'm new hereabouts (heard of this board on Overlander).

I have an '85 HJ75(2H) ute that I just spent the weekend 'servicing' the leaf springs of. Dreadful job, never imagined it would take so long. 2 days on a 9" grinder with a wire wheel is not my idea of an entertaining weekend.

Anyway, with the springs out, I did notice that the shock absorbers performance leaves quite something to be desired (I have had the ute 6 months). I have had a bit of a look around and can get some Aussie Ryder twin tube gas shocks for $500 for a full set, Terrain Tamers for $508 or TJM XGS for $600. The mob that sell Aussie Ryder also have a brand that they assemble themselves, a monotube gas, which they want $880 for a set of. The guy reckons that the monotubes may not be the best way to go as they can be damaged by big hits.

I have never replaced shocks before and am guessing that I will pretty much get what I pay for. I use the ute off-road quite a bit, some load carrying (400-700Kg) and some unladen commuting. What shocks represent the best value?

If any of you folks care to shed the light of your experience on my decision making process, I'd be ever so much obliged.

Chris
