Are Hilux Diffs interchangable?

My 83 hilux appears to have chewed out a rear diff (again!) and i am wondering if the front and rear diffs can be swapped. It is a 1983 diesel and the rear is a 4.5 ratio.
any help would be great

my mistake,
now that i have had a proper look i have discovered that they are both the same.

An 83 deisel shouldnt have a 4.5 ratio diff in it. It should have a 4.88 diff in it. This could explain why you have chewed out another diff centre. If the front is still a factory centre it will be a 4.88. The 4.5 in the rear wont work well with the front if in 4wd.
