Garden edge flares

I still have factory flares on my ride and factory mudflaps which I've tied back with chains to stop them scrubbing, but on full flex I'm a bit worried about ripping the flares/mudflaps off.

How do you attach garden edging to make up flares? Anyone got any closeup pics they can post up please?

I just screwed it to the lip on Dad's Patrol. Only problem I found is that it very stiff and I couldn't fit it all the way to the bottom of the arch. I can get some pics in the next couple of days if no one else gets in first.

heathx4's members thread has pics if you want them

mine might as well - can't remember if i put pics up or not.

basically just screw it straight into the 1/4 panel and you'll have to bend it sorta inwards because of the profile of the guard.

i found if you centre the flare and then screw it into the top of the guard first it worked the best.

Heres a pic of mine mabs on my shorty safari. I just pulled the fibreglass flares off and drilled some holes and screwed the bunnings ones on and they work magic. All I did to make them look better was round off the edges with a grinder and run a bead of black silicone along the gap between the panel and the flare

Thanks Rolls they look good, I"ll take a trip to Bunnings and see what I can fix up myself.

Tuff looking truck by the way. What size tyres are you running in that pic?

...and.......do you have a turbo on that beast?

They are 33's in that piccie mabs though I now have 35's on there now. On a 5" spring lift. I got rid of the factory flares as they were scrubbing on my 33's but now my 35's scrub slightly anyway. Havent got a turbo only a 2.5" exhaust and extractors, the extractors had to be custom made as the pto winch drive shaft went straight through where the extractors were supposed to go

Rolls,

Do you find the 2.5" exhaust and extractors make much difference to the perfomance? I"ll have to replace my exhaust soon as it's rusted to shit, but I can't afford a turbo now. If it makes much difference I may go for the free flowing exhaust like yours, do you have any mufflers on there? If not I'll just get a stocker.

Checked out some flexy flares today, I may use them cos I'm lazy and they will look good with very little effort, haha.

Wouldnt recommend the flexy flares...they sag and bend and end up looking shitty, so far the bunnings flares have stayed looking good, I even ripped one off, just screwed it back on and it was sweet again. My exhaust has made a fair bit of difference as it made it breathe easier and sounds a bit healthier. Its got a muffler in it and Im glad it does because otherwise it would be frickin loud. It does sound rather cool as well

The flexy flares look better, having said that the wider flexyflares sag without the wire and if you use the wire it ALWAYS works itself out

There are 2 types of flexy flairs - some have a wire/metal bit in them to stop sagging.

excuse me guys, are u sure everybody use garden edging as flares because i noe some of the comp guys run coloured stuff. I dont noe if bunnings would sell BLUE garden edging but I may be wrong.

not all flares are made from garden edging dude!

Some people are running that coloured plastic from revolution racegear (or similar shop). The rally guys use it for mud flaps as it takes alot of punnishment before it wears through.

I think you were meant to leave a bit of wire sticking out and then bend it over at each end, not just cut it off flush with the rubber.

But we didn't know that at the time

I did have the wire in my flexy's and they still ended up looking shitty, the bunnings flares are tanks and I havent managed to wreck them yet, plus they were cheaper

no doubting they would be cheaper, 4wd shop = expensive.
