40 stuff in 60 diffs

I have an empty 60 series rear housing and a pair of axles thats it...

Was curious as to whether 40 series rear diff centres will fit in it.... also whether they are the same ratio as a 60 series front ( i have a complete fron 60 diff )

also the brakeing componants and rear hub setup.... i have the housing and axles but cant see how the axle attaches to the housing....
all of those outer componants.......
can i use 40 series stuff here also for the 60 housing and axles???

if anyone has any of the outer brakeing componants and rear hub parts to fit the axle to the housing... please PM me.

Yep, it will bolt in the 60 housing, yep it is the same ratio, not sure on the hubs but i think they are the same. The axle bolts to the hub like a truck axle, so you can pull the axles out without removing anything else.

Just remembered the 60 and 40 have different yokes on the diffs, but not a major problem(unis are the same), and i dont think think they are interchangeable as the 40 diffs have a course spline on the pinion and the 60 has a fine spline. Not sure about the later 40 diffs though, they may have fine spline pinions.

champ later 40 diffs had the 30 or 31 coarse fine spline.

earlier had a 9 spline.

hope that helps with that bit, dunno bout axles though as 60s are 2 inch wider housings?

late 80-onwards 40 series have the same rear brakes as a 60 series,only the 40 series with the handbrake on the rear drums though.
40 series is shallower in width..

Screwy, this is about the rear diff, right?

The 40 series has several versions of rear axles.

Pre 1974, they are semi floaters and the parts are useless to you.
1975-1980 they are full floaters but the brake backing plate has a different bolt pattern from the 60 axle, they have twin cylinders and they lack parking brakes.
1981-1984 have the correct backing plate bolt pattern for the 60 axle. They have a single brake cylinder and have parking brakes. These are the ones for you to use.

The 45/47 series follows along the same lines as above, except that the troopie and pick up (those with factory beds with rigid sides) still retained the 1975-1980 style until the end of production in 1984. The cab chassis got the 1981-1984 style with parking brakes in 1981.

The axle attaches to the hub, which rides on the axle housing on two bearings at the end. Most of the hubs are interchangeable, but not identical.

got a 40 diff here and its a full floater but the bolt pattern isnt the same...

ill have to do some hunting for the bits i need
