Transfer woes
Transfer woes
Transfer starting to make a loud whine (think is transfer anyway), seeing as I just fitted some 31's looking to rebuild with some better gearing.
I have rebuilt a couple of engines but never really played around with gearboxes. Does this sort of operation require huge amounts of skill. knowledge and tools or is it within reach of your average home mechanic. Looking at purchasing the calmini 5.14's.
The other option is to purchase a 1L maruti xcase. Will this make much difference to highway speeds, off road etc I can get one for about $950 ( I think that was rebuilt ).
Any help, tips, advice would be much appreciated. ( I have searched but unforunately don't have time to go through pages of results)

The only tip I can give is don't go near Rockhopper gears. They break with 35s they break with 33s and they break with 32s and standard suzi running gear!!!!!!Any way The 1 litre case will give you bout 12% reduction in high and low by memery my gearing was about standard with 30s and a 1 l case. 5.12 ring and pinon are a option too, you should be able to get either for well under 950
Its a wheelbase thing
I'm running 36" tyres through mega heavy MQ patrol diffs with my series 3's and have had no problem. I also drive the crapper out of it. It is a trailer queen but if someone's going to break something it would be me.
How often do you change your transfer case oil?
You may find by changing the oil it comes good. Can also use some Nulon Gearbox and Diff Additive sourced from Repco or Bursons. I have used this for a while in my diffs, transfer and gearbox. Stops all sorts of noises.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
Changed the oil this arvo (and do so regularly) did not make any difference. To be honest I think I would rather adjust the gearing anyway. Being a daily driver lack of top end speed is already becoming frustrating . Not after a high performance overtaking machine but it would be nice to criuse in fifth againsierrajim wrote:I'm running 36" tyres through mega heavy MQ patrol diffs with my series 3's and have had no problem. Quick Question, whats your top end speed your getting? Im building a zook with 36'' Simex, HiLux 5.26's, but am still deciding on XFER gearing. Motor is a Isuzu 1.8 Diesel, 5 spd box. Will either be Calmini 5.14's or 6.5's. Would be nice to pull 100kph, or am i dreaming?sierrajim wrote:I'm running 36" tyres through mega heavy MQ patrol diffs with my series 3's and have had no problem. I also drive the crapper out of it. My gears broke after about 9 months (series 3) 6 months of that was in the shed. Oil was changed seveal times in that time, never any water in the case. Mine broke in 2 wheel drive high doing a hill start!!!! Some seem to last but there are a lot of crap sets getting about. if bying gears get anouther brand and save 1300 bucks, learn from me and others cous its deppressing when you can't afford to repace them for a while.

Back on Topic - The transfer case re-build is pretty easy, if you buy calmini gears you get the instructions too, dunno bout other gears though. You will need access to a press though to remove and fit the bearings though.

u dont drive it every day
so why would u be the one to break stuff?
i broke a series 3 with 33's they did cop a floggin
but for 1200 or so u expect them to last a bit longer
i still run a rockhopper now with the 37's it gets wheeled in rocks
and is driven every day
and they have held up
luck of the draw i guess

from the outside looking in... should a $1200 purchase come back to "luck of the draw"?redzook wrote: i broke a series 3 with 33's they did cop a floggin

Hey NUGGS,
I am running the 1ltr case and 3.9 diff ratios. I keep up with the traffic on the freeway fine with that. I run the 31's on 7's
Made a good difference as well. U should be able to get one for bout <$500.
The whine is usual as most sierras have this.
cheers

Did you fit the diff ratios or are they standard for your vehicle. What would I have in standard wt diffs?nicbeer wrote:Hey NUGGS,

I really should get someone to explain all this ratio and reduction talk as I am a bit lost when it comes to all these figures
Are maruti 1l cases hard to come by:?: Apparently they bolt straight up to the wt flanges. Suziwest has a couple but damn their expensive. Do importers normally do gearboxes etc as well

Yours would be 3.7. not that much of a difference. 3.9 is factory in NT's
I got the case of here. cheers -Mick-.
thanks
Try suzukishop or any of the 4wd wreckers. Any late 1ltr with the 4wd light(looks the same externally as your one) will work. You can also swap the flanges of your case onto the 1L.

What's involved with swapping the flanges over? I have spoken to a couple of wreckers this morning and they reckon the splines on the cases are different thus flanges won't swap over. What's the gonicbeer wrote:Yours would be 3.7. not that much of a difference. 3.9 is factory in NT's

If you get the right 1ltr case from the late 84 or a maruti. Externally they are the same as a 1.3 case including the splines and mounts.
I used a rattle gun and breaker bar to get my flanges off and mount my ones from my case onto it. I have a couple of WT flanges somewhere here if you find a case as well.
cheers

A couple i know think of:
Is the noise there when coasting or moving off under load. All gears? revs related?
put both in neutral and then try either/or when coasting or reving.
I have a 1.3 case you can prob borrow to see if it is the xfer if you need it. Will need flanges on it .
cheers
