Leaking Diffs....amajor problem?

Post by gotoy »

My bundy diffs are leaking. Does this mean I just need to open up and replace the seals or do a major overhaul?

and... by a leak, you mean is it streaming out or is it just a weep with a bit of dust gathering on it?

Thanks guys, I'll crawl under tonight and locate the exact leak. The leak leaves a reasonable size oil patch on the floor each night, what would be around a 10" diameter circle. Just looking from the rear, looks like the source is the gasket between the axle housing and the differential carrier.

if that is the case, it will be necessary to remove the axles, remove the differential, clean up the sealing surfaces, and reinstall. it is not a common place for them to leak but if it is leaking there, then fix it before all your oil drains out and you run the diff dry - it will las tabout 50km once all the oil is drained away.
