hows it goin guys,
just wondering what i should be expecting to pay for a new starter motor, it shat itself today, had to clutch start it and get it to the auto leccy but that was at 6pm today, sunday, so just wonderign how much i should be expecting to pay tomorrow morning???

Starter Motor Woes

thanks scott just wanted some guide as to how much thats sweet, so suggestions as to should i just get it rebuilt and how long will that take? need the car for uni, and could it yhave happened from going through water/mud or just shat itself???
Mud kills them real easily - that's what killed mine. Starter motor is kept hot by the exhaust. Dunk it in cold sloppy mud, the air inside contracts, and pulls crud into the housing. It's not until the mud dries and turns gritty that the starter starts to struggle and fail.
Mine was reconditioned in the one day - there's nothing particularly tricky about them.
I asked them to seal it up real good, then fitted a small tube fitting and attached a long breather hose, up to above the master cylinder. I'm working on the theory that air will be sucked down the hose rather than in anywhere else. And I'm trying hard to avoid mud.

When you say dead is it totally cactus or just struggling to turn.
They are not a hard unit to remove and strip down if you are at all mechanically minded. When playing in mud I used to have to strip mine anywhere up to 4 times a year and clean out all the crud. Takes about an hour of your time.

nah it started out that it was just struggling to turn over, and then now there is nothign when you hit the key, nothign at all, not even that little knocking sound you get when it wouldnt turn over but could hear it trying its at the auto leccy this time getting fixed, next time i guess ill have to have a look myself, didnt really have the time

thanks heaps guys for your help and ideas, just picked him up just then they put a new starter in for me, 200 bucks including labour, so yeh sounds good to me im happy i guess, and the guy, the auto leccy that did it, said that he opened it up had a look and it wasnt mud or anything, and that he wouldnt have even bothered rebuilding it, so he put a new one in, not a refurbished one
