F20 engine and running gear upgrade

Post by RobF300 »

I gotta get dad to do something with his F20, he doesnt want to sell it but the engine is wellll on the way out and the rest of the components, i suggested a rebuild, and he seems kind of keen.

Would be interested to know if the 16v efi engine will go in, and what 5 speed gearboxes can be used with that? Maybe have to look at another option but these engines seem to do the job just fine and easially available (found a wrecker local that does them for $700 with gear from an applause.). Im not sure but suspect rocky gear can be used (diffs, brakes, gbox)...

Not for serious 4wd but it certainly needs to do more than 80km an hour@10000 rpm, should see the lines of traffic he gets behind him on the highway into town ;)

Would be different i couldnt find anyone looking to do an EFI engine in this little beast, but think it would be quite capable...

Ill get some pics of the beast next time i get a chance he has had it for near to 12 years and still in ... semi-ok nick for its age.

Let me know

Cheers
Rob

18r seems to be a common conversion in these tuff little rigs, dunno what else fits, but look in the f20 pics thread, chris's rig is pretty sweet.

if he really wants to get serious a 3.5 litre rover V8 will fit in!
and to run that he needs standard running gear and 33" tyres or bigger.

or

a 2 litre conversion like im planning to do. just an 18R with a mild cam and maybe some webber carbies.

If You like the idea then go ahead and do it. It wont be impossible nothing is! It may be hard thou but with proper planing and research yes it can be done!

The 18r conversion is the straight forward SOFT option! Go bigger and if u can manage it go EFI.

Also Christoph dual carbies on a four cylinder WOW u going to drown the bitch!

12r seems to eat fuel at a massive rate anyways, it is an extttreeemly costly car to run for what you get out of it at the moment and he avoids driving it whenever possible, but still loves it ;)

Would be a good way to get started in the whole modification thing, the f20 seems like a very straightforward car, and i know a little bit about the 16v engines... may well give it a shot... ill grab pics on the weekend, also have the f20 workshop manual maybe scan that in sometime if people are interested...

Aren't the later toyota 4y efi? If so you'll have a really easy swap but still no powerhouse (tho a big improvement over the thirsty 12r)

I think overall gearing will be a big issue to make use of the low gearing. (bigger rubber recommended   ) Or a engine that loves to rev.. I've read an article of a fella who has the the stock tire size but slotted a 4age in ..

maybe it was a 4agze (it has 125 hp), he had to rev it real hard to make use of the power.

Oh yeah now were getting the right idea! These little beasts will hammer with a half decent engine! Chris took his out last night for a fairly decent night run. Shame there was no pics taken but the car was reasonably impressive on the new tyres. He could use a bit more power thou!

Do your research on the 4AGZE they sound HELLA COOL!

Would be best to find out first what motor is legally alowed to be fitted before you get your hopes up...

I've put an 18R in my old girl, as well as a five speed from the later model (among other mods over the decades of ownership), so I can speak from experience.

Dellow is the only kit manufacturer that make a conversion kit.

is that just for the bell housing? or engine mounts as well.

im looking at putting in an 18R but after ive put in a mild cam, maybe port and polish the head and some webber carbies. what do you think?

im still tryin to find out if the 18R bolts straight up to the standard F20 4speed box. does anyone know?

Hey Chris, I did a little research on that, thanks to Area54 I came to understand that the 18r (and the 20/22r) don't have the cowl(right word??) that surrounds the flywheel on the 12r. The dellows kit , from what I understand, is basically this surrounding that bolts on to the 12r bellhousing so matching it to the gearbox shouldn't be a problem. Still haven't found a 18r or 22r over here for a reasonable price so I'm also looking at 3y'sand rocky belhousing for an even easier swap but these are also hard to find and expensive at wreckers. So I might ending up politely asking u guys to help me ship the dellows kit to me when I finally have the funds to find and buy myself an 18rg :D

cheers

No, the 18R does not bolt up directly to the 4/5speed box. On the 12R the bell housing is cast into the block, on the 18R it is in the form of a bolt on extension housing. Dellow make an extension housing that bolts onto the 18R bell. BUT you will have to modify the inside of the dellow housing to fit over the flywheel, mine was not machined out enough and fowled on the ring gear. If you have a router and the right bits its no big deal. Also I needed to retap all the holes - dellows taps must be a bit worn out... eht housing is alloy so is easy to work. Dellow also make engine mounts, these are cast brass and incorporate the bracket for the alternator - 12R unit - but needed some shaping (with a file) to make it all fit - again nothing major if you have basic skills. The alloy housing has the mount for the clutch cable also.

If you have any specific questions don't hesitate to post them up - I have heaps of info on it for you.
