afternoon all,
my 83 hilux has started making a grinding noise when i back off the accelerator,we have checked the diff and everything seems fine so i presume it is probaly the gearbox,it was rebuilt 6 months ago and of course is now out of warranty and the place that did it refuse to believe that it is the gearbox,at the moment i cant take it anywhere to get it looked at but if anyone has an idea to what else it may be then that would be helpful.
it has not done any hard work since the rebuild apart from towing a trailer for a day and it is not driven hard.
acheers

Gearbox stuffed?

sounds very similar to my gear box/transfer case when it went,
mine blew because a huge chunk of the transfer case blew out and lost all the fluid, so maybe check your gear box/transfer case for fluid if not already done,
thats what i can gather from my experinces...
cheers

i did this when trying to isolate the same problem 45punkbus is talking about, and was convinced it was the gearbox due to thisModified Toy wrote:I would put the transfer into neutral and drive the gear box up through the gears i know there will not be load on the gears ,but interesting if the nosie is still there.
other than that try uinversals slip yolk or the pinion flange nut to make sure it is tight.
i didn't realise the idler shaft still turned in Neutral.
i'm tipping if the T case wasn't rebuilt at the same time, that could be the issue, but check uni joints etc. their cheaper to fix
what prompted the gearbox rebuild?
Spit my last breath
