Engine rebuild

Post by drewe »

Has anyone rebuild the top end of their engine? Mine has a problem, there is a persistent 'loose' sound in the head, and when started warm (and sometimes cold) only comes with 2/3 cylinders at first and is hard to move - and then blows a one off, large billow of smoke...

The rattle makes me think loose valve (actually, persistent tapping, loud enough to be heard but not much more). THe oil makes me think it is draining into the cylinder at stop - and I am a b it low on power and fuel economy i 'feel' - valvle again?

Anyway, anyone done it? Is it like impossible, or easy enough that someone with patience and time could do?

Thanks

Have you had the valve clearances adjusted lately? Won't cure the oil consumption problem, but might fix the noise and lack of power.

Engines are cheap, may be better than a rebuild... Local wrecker in Canberra quoted $700 for an applause motor with 3 month warranty!

FOund the problem!

Simple problem to find in the end, problem is, fix is a pain.

My head is leaking water into the cylinder.... That is why it is hard to start (engine has a compression stroke and water does not compress), oil looks crap after 50K's, sounds bad, uses tons of fuel and has noises in the head....

:x

Oh well, got it REAL cheap and ewven with mechanics cost to fix all this (and since it is off getting lifters done over, new timing belt, etc) I got it cheap and I now will have a good motor....

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions, and will let you know if I find anything else!
