Why cut the back off.

Post by nicbeer »

Hey,

Not strictly tech - content may end up being so.

Seen a lot of people doing it - some for comps and some not.
just wondering why people are doing it.

Is it for looks :)
to extend the wb for tyres
suspension fitment. ie coilovers/shocks centred in rear similar to lj xtreems.
minimising panel damage or removing panel damage.

A ute conversion is a simple thing to do and makes it easier to do the following:

- Move the diff back
- lift your fuel tank
- run a roll cage
-minimize panel damage

And if set up in such a way carry more gear.

Some say weight but the rear 1/3 of a sierra only weight 28kg (i weighed mine)
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
1. helps with articulation as there is less to hit on
2. looks tuff
3. minimises panel damage
4. helps fit bigger tyres

Where do you guys store the spare wheel? how do you hold it in.

Under the tray or above it - i am thinking below as above the tray will add to the cog.

cheers

Go on nic - do the chop and paint the body in the lovely flouro orange to suit your rims!!! hahaha

i think the ute idea is pretty cool, although theres 2 things that dont grab me:

1) no rear speakers
2) no undercover storage for my bike / anything else i want to store. - it all gets mudded

Well the next rig I get I would really love to keep the rear intact, but if I want tires larger then 33’s I think the wheel base will need to be extended so much so that the rear will need to come off.

If you cut the rear you really make it a lot easier to work on as well. Think of setting up some custom shock mounts when the rear has been removed compared to intact.

Also to move the diff back more then three inchs you have to relocate the fuel tank.

Lastly search as this topic was flogged a while back. Everyone seemed to decide flat trays are Grimace, but now every one seems to be getting one. A bit like mullets ay.

only reason i got a ute was to strech the wheelbase

nothing to do with fitting tires or flex or panels

exo saves panels
grinder makes room for tires
and wheel base has nothing to do with flex

if you want a long wheel base just get a long wheel base to start with just like i did (i got 2 actually one of them i cant use as its got no numbers on it {was like it when i got it and i know it sounds and looks suss} but i might be willing to part with it for the right money)

Suss?

No suss is suggesting that as the numbers on the sj413 are on the firewall (unlike the 1lt's) to cut out the firewall and weld a new one in it's place, grind the edges, smooth over the welds and surrounding are with 2mm of bog to build up a flat surface and respray ;)

After my ute is done id like to start a full bodied sierra similar to redzooks old red rig, hardtop, 33's, exo'd, but have the rear cut in on an angle.

im gonna leave my rear on, i figure the more tidy it looks, the less hassle i may have with cops & rta, etc:  Eventually it may come off, but it looks so pretty now...Just having arches & flares cut to suit tyres.

just standard zook leafs in front, the rears are new 1" lifted, but am as yet undecided on what to do with them. May just lose a couple, or go elliptic rear. If the rear does come off, it will become a buggy of sort, with coilovers in rear. The cars been off the road for over a year, fixing things, will be out & about within a couple of weeks im hoping. Thinking of a false floor over the rear, to sleep on, with storge underneat it, & have even less mud to contend with yet again!! Thats assuming i can remember where to find anywhere with either camping or mud or both.
