SAS conversion ideas.....

SAS conversion ideas.....
He who laughs last thinks slowest.
I think it will end up costing a shit load more than if you reversed the Hilux diff housing.
A diff housing reversal will cost around $500. The mods required for your front shaft are only worth $200 or so if you use a high pinion Bundera/80 Series Cruiser diff centre.
The problem with using a right hand drop pumpkin is the exhaust you would need a custom set of headers to change the outlet pipe to the left hand side this will cost $$$$$
Also there is no way known I would use a Rover divorced t/case I just could never trust it.
A better option (if you went this way) would be a MK Patrol divorced case which are quite strong but there are no low range gears available (standard ratio is 2.2:1).
But you have to sort out the mounts etc and thats gonna cost.
I still believe the housing reversal is the cheapest way to go.
The other option is a left hand drop D-44 from a early 80's Jeep Wagoneer but these are low pinion and you will probably need a double cardan front shaft due to the extra angle.

The Rover transfer is one of the strongest around, rover can't make diff's for shiat but there TC are one of the best. add to that they actually have a "low range" 3.32:1 STANDARD...there are 4.9 and now 5.95 sets available aftermarket.Bitsamissin wrote:IAlso there is no way known I would use a Rover divorced t/case I just could never trust it.

Hmmmm still not convinced about the Rover cases, Paj Challenge 2 yrs ago 2 crapped themselves and I've been out with another 2 that have died. Maybe they were old and had seen better days. But as you said they do have good ratio's especially the high range 1.2:1 or whatever it is.
I still believe that due to the room available keeping it simple will be the cheapest & easiest way to go whether you do it yourself or pay someone to do it.
If it was an auto I would say go the NP231 as it is a virtual bolt on to the Paj auto (just needs output shaft shortened by a few mm) this could be mated to a D-44 left hand drop axle or reversed Lux axle (cheap & plentiful parts). Also 4:1 gears are available for it.

don't get me wrong. a SAS is going to be a good thing no matter which way the up the diff is.
BUT, if your going to SAS I assume your wanting to drive harder stuff so 40:1 gearing isn't going to be much chop turning 35's......
No mater what you do, wether you use a hilux, landcruiser and Rover transfer the oppotunities these open up is huge... 3.32, 4.7 4.9 5.95 .... now your starting to talk 70:1 - 80:1....and thats crawling
