td 42

Post by matty b »

anyone ever had the bottom end were out o there td42?
mine has 352000 clicks and while warming it up i was finishing a few bits under the bonnet and noticed a faint big end knock that dosnt go away and gets progrssivly worse through the rev range. it sounds like a # 2 big end. it has good oil pressure and the oil is changedregularly. i pulled the i have the sump off and it all looks good( only have mains out so far get bearings tommorow so will do big ends then) but this seems strange as the motor hasnts been flogged and has been look after

Did you try an injector cut to see if noise changed? Piston slap and oil hitting crank sometimes makes same noise.

Cant imagine bearings would be too bad at that amount of km's. A bad injector/leaking injector can give a knock almost identical to a bad main bearing. Here is a pic of one of the big-ends replaced during my recent re-build after 550,000km's. Engine was quiet and had good oil pressure and consumed no oil between changes.

Hey, did you manage to get the mains out with the crank shaft in place??
eg, i wasn't sure if you could get the upper shell out.
I had managed to get the upper shells out on my pommy truimph 2500PI, buit my TD42 mentioned nothing. Wasn't keen to try incase i buggered something!!!!

Bearings are so cheap, i would love to fire a new set in.
Its a Jap import and they are bloody slack with their servicing over there, so at 170K it may be worth it, the bottom shells were very slightly pitted.

Anyways, didn't mean to thread jack....................
