what to do?? decisions.. decision..

Post by InSanE »

i have a delemma on my hands i dont know what to do my MK
with all i have done to it it owes me about 5 - 6 grand including purchase of car, it has guard cut 2" spring 2" shackle and 2" body lift, it also has dual battery's full length roof racks, bush ranger flexi flares, 34x11.5Jt2's it is a quite capable offroad machine. and with 480,000km on the clock the head has decided to crack on me and with that many km i am worried about putting a head on it because the bottom end might shit its self, What should i do sell it and buy a GQ on build a motor for it? i priced all parts i will need will cost me about 2200 + machining as i will assemble it myself what should i do ?

3 things that I can think of are
1/ Take what you can off the vehicle that you can transfer to another patrol or
2/ Rebuild the motor you have or
3/ Replace the motor with either another motor the same(cheaper) or bite the bullet and upgrade to a bigger motor like a V8 :D

I am not sure I'd be that worried about putting a new head on the motor you've got. They are supposed to be pretty strong.

If you try to sell it as is you'll get stuff all for it to put towards a GQ. So I would be leaning toward the cheap version of repairing the motor and then treat the car mean until it dies a couple of years from now.

Also I think that you may miss the sd33t if you go to a GQ.

My two cents worth.

Rebuild the motor, at least you know it's rock solid then and you'll never have another problem with it.

Sounds like you have a pretty reliable and capable off roader already -> I'd consider keeping it because if you sell it now, you'll get next to nothing back on it, and there is a chance you'll end up with a dud engine in the GQ anyway.

Should be able to get a secondhand NA SD33 cheap and put your turbo bits on that.

A lot of people have picked up cheapo SD33's in MQ's.

You'd get maybe a grand for the car with a dead engine - leaving you about $10k short of a decent diesel GQ.

I have a head, sitting on an engine, mine cracked and i bought this one, it was like new and cost me 900 bucks, i then spent an extra 400 dollars on reconditioning the head (valve seats stems etc etc)

If your really worried and intend on keeping it, rebuild the whole donk and get another 480,000 out of it. But that becomes a LONG term investment. Then again the body probably wont last that long.

Although you have a few mods, you wouldnt lose that much. Tires, dual battery you can reuse, suspension and roofrack you could sell off..

Complete engine rebuild about $6-8k inc head? possibly more? Then what does the truck owe you?

You could get a GQ for a few more grand. put JT on GQ with dual batteries, and go from there.

or a donk from wrecker? but that is a lottery.

i priced all parts i will need will cost me about 2200 + machining as i will assemble it myself what should i do

my 5 cents. if you can rebuild the motor for that price it sounds
like the best option although if you also need injectors and a
reco pump[at 480k i'm guesing possibly needs doing]
easily add another $2000 dollars to that price.

to trade up to a gq at say $9000 for a diesel one you'll throw
away $400 to transfer the rego alone which could be spent
on the current rebuild and would be viable if it would only cost
the 2-3k you are talking as you're current truck looks pretty
well set up and you know it well.

rpm engines quoted a mate aprox $4500{i think} for the sd33t
engine but to enable the guarantee he would also have had to
do the injectors and pump so all up $6500, in the end more
than the car was worth he cut hi losses and went gq.

Also I think that you may miss the sd33t if you go
to a GQ

i used to have this motor and now have a diesel gq and find the
4.2 more than acceptable in standard form.

or you could buy something like this link {for a realistic price}
and strip it for any parts you need and flog the rest, should
work out cost effective but you don't want a v8. just an
option good luck with whatever you do.

Buy a 2nd hand head thats been tested & fit it.........

why .......

cheapest option

gets the rig back on the road ASAP

resale value isnt lost due to "dead motor" syndrome

The bottom end on a well cared for SD33T will happily see out 700,000km + so I'd not worry about that.

beofre the bottom end screws up then you'll blow it up in another way.

Mind you replacing bottom end bearings is far from hard anyway.
