GQ and GU Intercooling
GQ and GU Intercooling
HI Y'all,
I am thinking of intercooling my 1990 GQ 4.2 dsl Patrol. I am wondering if anyone has added an IC to one of these. I have a DTS turbo system, fitted by Berrima Dsl.
If anyone has any info or pics that they could post or email to me that would be great.
Also, I have a mate with a 1999 GU and he is fitting a factory turbo system to his 4.2 dsl. He is also interested in an IC for the setup.
We are currently debating the TMIC/FMIC issue. Personally I wouldn't go for a FMIC in a car that sees regular mud and hard 4WDing. I would only use a FMIC on a road/light offroad car. Damage and mud etc is not worth the hassle. Heat soak is an issue but not owhen you need the power, like highway driving. Of course with a TMIC you will need a scoop of some sort...
THOUGHTS?

If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!
if you are a little mechanical minded, you can do it your self, as the safari kit is a bit pricey. Look around for a intercooler core of a performance car or even get a custom core, then do the pipe work. If done right, you will get good power and it will be cheaper then a safari kit.

That's pretty much my plans. I have a WRX and have a lot of contacts that can get me stock intercoolers at decent prices.
The issue for me (and hence why I asked for pics) was understanding how the piping will run, for best effect.

Its cheap horsepower a intercooler, they are so cheap these days. Have you got a three inch exhaust no mufflers. If not, first try that. I think the DTS turbo's have a small dump pipe, like only 2.5inch so it will go from a 2.5 to a 3. May as well go a 2.5. If you are a hardcore driver and goes hard, put a front mount behind the grille, it is possible. But it is alot of mucking around. If it is just a bit of a tourer and a few tracks, go a top mount. Which everway you go, it will be better.

I do drive it quite hard, and do a fair bit of weekend warrior work, whick includes tracks and beach.
The car already has a 3" system from the turbo back. It has a 3" dump from the turbo too. My main reason for fitting it is that I have read that it will help lower my intake temps on torturous hill climbs. At the moment I regularly see the temp guage move up a few mm, and more with a load on. There's also the power advantage too.
Anyway, I am not intwerested in front mount systems. Only top mount.

PS: DOES ANYONE HAVE A SAFARI INTERCOOLER FITTED TO THEIR CAR?

Have a safari fitted but got the pump timing and boost sorted straight after I fitted it. The results didn't jump out at me in the short distance I drove the car prior to getting it tuned. Nothing like the 3" exhaust did, couldn't miss that difference. The safar intercooler is pretty small, not much bigger than a nissan one, though it is front mount.
