Portals

Post by -Richo- »

Does anyone have diagrams, exploded views, plans etc of portal axles? I have some exploded views of volvo portals and would like some of unimogs especially. Ive been googling to no avail, if anyone can help let me know.

TIA.

i got some links for ya. if you are interested in getting them, i would recomend you go for the volvos as they are quite strong but not as bulky and heavy. If you are just running 37inch tyres and under, i wouldnt recomend these as the only available ratios left are the 7:1 ratios (or whereabouts) all the 5:1 have been snapped up and are very rare.

interesting prices on the used unimogs. Even with shipping you should get them for around $3000 to $3500 roughly. Dont know what they are worth here, and dont know where to look to compare.
Its not cool, unless it's got boost :)

You can buy a whole 404 mog in germany for a few hundred euro.

The only problem is arranging shipping and transport to the docks.

Yes, but unfortunately nowhere near a port. I am thinking of shipping a 404 back when I come home though. I have seen them go as low as e150 for a complete 404 on ebay.

I really want a uniknick though - would be just about unstoppable. Has 2 non steer axles and steers hydraulically by flexing in the middle.

Swival steer loaders fall over easier then conventional steer loaders when working on angles. The COG changes as you manouevre.

The volvo's portals are not well renowned for holding up to bigger tyres though so if you are looking to go big and play hard then unimog 404's or 406's are a much better choice.

Best place to go is http://www.pirate4x4.com and SEARCH and then ask around for all of the information you need.
Plenty of people running them, and plenty of vendors who know their stuff.

cheers
