Turbo diesel with no muffler ??

When I had my turbo installed they fitted about a metre of 3 inch pipe from the back of the turbo but then attached to the tiny standard zorst. Now I have read that a muffler is not needed and i plan to use straight pipe exiting just in front of the back wheel, what are peoples thoughts. Now I have done a search and read the rellevent posts.

4 cyl ones sound crap without a muffler, 6 cyl ones on the other hand sound sweet with no muffler. It also sounds better the bigger the turbo.

do it without a muffler then if your not happy with it you can add to it whereas if you get a muffler fitted and your not happy with it and remove the muffler thats 100-200bux you have wasted

Yeah thats true, I am 90% sure I am going to do it, only going to cost me $40 to do it providing I weld it up to the existing pipe

Why not just cut it off where they mated the big exhuast to the little system and see what you think.
if it needs a muffler fit one if not more tube.
Might be worth finding out where were it can exit the car. as I think it says past the rear most opening.
Even though it is a soft top it may still mean it has to goto the rear of the car.

I have had two turbo diesels now, and I have cut the muffler out of both of them. First was a Chevy 6.5TD that sounded sweet and since the ex got that one I now have a new Cruiser 1HD-FTE ute, it sounds nowhere near as good as the Chev did, but it sounds much better than factory. Also, it goes better, gets better fuel economy and isn't that much lounder than with a muffler.

ive got 3 in straight thru, wistles nice but isn't too loud until the foot goes down, fitted a 3 in hot dog to it, softened it a little and a little increase in power @16 pds

I'm happy I run no muffler with my 4.2L turbo diesel with 3" exhaust in a LC troopy. The sound is a bit loud by bearable, it is comparable to a my Chev powered shortie with a Flowmaster muffler.

I was told that if the exhaust system is long enough, the exhaust sound from a turbo diesel would not be too loud, but some that have done it in on a SWB find it too loud. But this is all hearsay, so take it for what it is worth.

The stock muffler is probably killing your performance. Either way I would remove it. You can always install a larger diameter muffler if you don't like the sound without.

which part of the exhaust is the catalitic converter in?

apparently if you remove that you gain a few extra ponies, but its very illegal.



you will get a really nice (read: loud) turbo whistle without a muffler, am i right?

Mick, diesels don't have a catalytic converter, that's something unleaded cars get to have.
I don't have any muffler on mine (2.8 turbo with 2 1/2" straight through) its hard to describe the sound but I do think a hot dog type muffler may help with some of the annoying noise side of it.

ive just fitted mr 2.8 with a turbo running 2 3/4" straight through in the cab sounds almost normal but outside my wife says it is a bit loud so i might fit a hotdog or something to take the edge off it goes very well

Make it high and un noticable and without a muffler first up, then if its to loud or sounds GH EY you can make the change.

true but doesnt apply to diesels and only if they can prove that your car is over the limit on gas emissions,that is why they have sniffers at the roadside inspections you see

I too thought that only petrols have them but I was assured by 'Beaudesert Exhaust' that they do.

both my jackaroo (1999) and rodeo (2002) have cats in them from factory. Apparently not necessary as commercials dont need them by law, but thats the way they came from japan.

Nissan ZD30 motors DO have a cat (Nissan calls it that), it is because they need to meet euro spec emission laws. You can not remove it by law you can change it for one that does suit your pipe diameter and it needs to equal or better the factory one for emissions.

You can not have a side exit exhaust on a soft top. It must be straight rear exit, though some downward angle is allowed for.

yep. coasters come from the factory with a side exit exhaust. the windows stop opening after the pipe on that side.

Law states - must exit 50mm from edge of car and clear door opening by same amount.

Side draught exhaust are fine on shorties as long as 50mm behind door jam and face down. My housemate had one on his BJ. Legal.

I also didnt think they were legal , reason being for fumes , and if you motor lets go and you spray oil out of your pipes it goes all over your rear wheels , thats what i was told a while ago .
