well my left one has shat its self, and when the bundy's sitting there for a couple of days i will find a dribble of oil on my tyre.

How hard is it to replace them myslef??
as i have never done one before.

Or should i bite the bullet and fork out a couple of hundred to get it down at a mechanics???

the kit from memory is about $250 and comes with all gaskets n seals
even hub seal for the wheel bearings

not a hard job just a full day of cleaning and replacing parts thats if you r doin wheelbearings too as well as replacing the contaminated diff oil and cleaning and re packing the cv's

just be prepared to get dirty

and don't loose or mix up the king pin bearing shims and also look out for any camber correction king pin bearings in the left hand side

if your mechanic charges you a couple of hundred the full job prob isn't getting done i think u might shit a brick when you find out the price for the proper job to be done :cry:

not a huge job i just did mine on my 40 more that likley your inner axle seal is dead

i did mine in 3-4 hours both sides not a really hard job if your mechanically inclined

sounds alright then, i might pull me mate over and knock over a side each, how woill i tell if the inner axle seal has gone???

there was mud/dirt over the felt bit on the swivel hub, i take it that mud would get in there and fark it??

BINGO and that same mud will be goin threw the cv ,king pin bearings
and the seal is gorne
its the diff oil seeping into the cv housing and then leaking out

I picked up the kit for my LN106 hilux for $120, can't see your being much more. Definately isn't only the wipers that are perished but also the axle seals as mentioned. Mine went after a CV and is apparently common with CV damage. It's not a hard job, just time consuming. Hardest part for me was getting the bloody cone washers out of the hub, still no biggy though.

GREG have a look on ebay :idea: I got a full swivel hub kit +wheel bearings for muy lux for $129 or some thing and that was the BUY IT NOW price and all the componants were of good quality so its worth a try. ;)

yeah definatly ebay is the way to go theres kits on there buy it now for 99bux with free postage i couldnt wait and paid $120 at the parts store

Hey, everyone else sums it up sweet...it is a pretty easy job expecially if you have a workshop manual close by. It is messy though!!! So when you pull things apart try and keep the clean bits clean, i.e put them in plastic bags or rap them in clean rag or something.

With regards to the inner axle seal...it could possibly be just due to age that it has perished and is chewed out. However it can also be chewed out by other problems such as corroded/pitted sealing surface on axle...or worn bronze bushes in the stub axle which will cause increased clearances and the axle to flop around slightly which will chew out the seal. The point here is that check out the other things while you have it apart or you may put it all back together and not too far down the track you will have the same problem.

i think in the tyotas owners manual it sugget to drive around occasionally with the hubs locked in when 4wd is not being used alot

Another reason the axle seal leaks is if you have the wrong amont of shims to little or to many put pressure on the seal so always put back the same amount of shims as you pulled out and don't get em mixed up :idea:

You need one for a 1985-1989 75 series or for a Hilux. In 1990 75 series swivels became larger and the housing felt and seal will not suit yours.

Like everyone says, it is very messy. I use a toilet paper to wipe off the excess grease before I try to clean the parts in a parts cleaner. I'm too cheap to use shop towels for this purpose. Mark the shims and each individual bearing as to what position they are from.

yeah i think it will be best to pay somebody to do it, so one of may mates mates is doing for $550 cash, inclusing all the parts, bearings, greese, etc

thanks for the help guys......owning a 4B certainly puts a dent in ur pocket at the worst of times :cry: :cry:

some mate, hes ripping u of blind, the parts will cost like $150 max, just get a few real friends round one sat with a case and do it, dont take all that long,

30 grease
15 degreaser to clean all the bits in

I have an HJ61 Land cruiser with hubs I can't stop leaking because there is a wear mark on the axle itself. When I put the new seal in I had to take a small amount of the spring out of the seal so it would have a tighter seal around the axle. This worked for a couple of months but because of the seal wear on the axle it was bound to start leaking again, I have to replace the axles to stop it leaking for another 10 years My point is make a good inspection of your axles before replacing them into the diff, if they have wear marks a new seal wont fix it.

i have been told (when investigating my leaking hubs) that a grooved or worn axle surface can be fixed with a speedi sleeve for about 10 bucks a side.

A good Mechanic can replace all these seals on a hoist with the right tools in less than 1.5hrs. And thats taking his time.

Shop around the full seal kit including Trunion bearings is available for as low as $75 and thats still using good Quality Bearings.
