Size hole to drill for 1/4" BSPT tap??

Post by slowhilux »

I'm putting a EGT gauge in the truck, and the thermocouple is a 1/4" bspt compression fitting. Need to know what size hole to drill for the 1/4" bspt tap??

youll be pushing shit up hill to get a reliable thread in exhaust pipe. i recommend to take thermocouple to local industrial supplies get a net to fit and have that welded on by your local friendly exhaust place. wont cost much more then a slab in total

id just drill a hole to suit a nut with the right thread to suit the EGT and weld it on.

Thats how it was done on my old turbo setup

The exhaust has an M18x1.5 plug in it. I will be drilling and tapping that. I do realise i would be pushing shit uphill to try and tap the exhaust pipe.

When racing we used an olive mount on a hose clamp to hold the thermocouple and then drilled a hole to suit the thermocouple in the header and then put the hose clamp on. This seemed to work pretty well, as the direct fittings used to crack and snap.

For 1/4" BSPT you need max. 11.2mm tapping drill size.
