Rear Diff locks for a V6 Grand Vitara

Post by fustercluck40 »

G'day.

Just wondering if anyone has installed Rear Diff locks in a GV without changing the diff centres etc.

A number of people have mentioned Detroit Auto Lockers or Lockrights can be fitted. However, when I call the suppliers, they sa No there is nothing made for the GV.

Are they correct ???

I have also heard a rumour that ARB may be making air lockers for the GV... However, there is no time frame on that one.

I have a 1999 V6 Grand Vitara... with ARB OME supension kit fitted and 225/75 R16 BFG Muddies.

If front diff locks can be fitted that would be a bonus.

Can any one help or have any suggestions i.e part numbers, who can fit them etc.

A vitara Airlocker will bolt straight into the rear of your GV.

I had front and rear ARB airlockers in my 03 GV.

That is very interesting.

I have spoken to ARB in the past and they knew nothing about the Vitara air locker bolting into the GV.

Have you got the 4 Cylinder or the V6.. I have a feeling the diffs are differnent in the older models?

Are you able to provide more information on what is required.

From experience ARB have told me that the Vitara DIFFS & Grand VITARA Diffs are different. Ithink the GV diffs are slightly larger in the rear.

this happened in 2003. what i did for mine was get a complete rear vitara 3rd with 5.125 R/P and set the rear airlocker up in this. for the front i changed to the 5.125 R/P with airlocker in the GV steel housing. you'll also need a vitara inner axle and a stub axle.

ARB know all about this, i've seen it in their install book. when i was first looking at doing it, they didn't really want to do it and sent me to someone else. I ended up working it out myself and installing them.

Thanks for the information.

I had an idea you needed to change the diff centres etc.

:P

It sounds complicated if you have to rely on mechanics to do the job as I do.

As I have a V6, the Calmini LSD will not fit..
Anyway, I will kleep looking.

Have you tried Suzuki Australia? I know Suzuki NZ had LSD's for some models listed in their accessory list awhile back. They had part numbers and pricing too, think it was in a pdf I found online.

they are 12 bolt, just remember in 2003 they changed the center and ring gear to a larger size.

the rear is easy for pre 03 GV's any vitara locker should work.

Be about AUD$852 + shipping after conversion and deducting the 12.5% GST for exporting.

Wonder what Suzuki Australia wants for them?

Spoke to ARB in Richmond.

To my supprise, they can fit an airlocker to my rear diff on the GV.
However, he did say that some models may require a vitara 3rd member (what ever that is).

Is there an easy way to tell if I need additional parts etc ??

ANyway, sounds promising...
He also mentioned they have a new compressor (only for lockers)...
Has anyone had any dealing with this ???

I already have a portable Big Read tyre compressor so I do not need another one.

So as I understand this, The Airlocker will bolt straight in to the rear diff without any additional parts (may require bearings though )

Am I correct ??

Anybody fitted a rear locker to a GV or 2.0 V6 Vit and kept the original R&P, particularly a 4.875?

Trying to find a 4.875 to fit a rear airlocker to go in a GV. The I.D. of the GV ring is smaller than the normal Vit rear and the offset is different too. Thought an earlier one from a 2.0 V6 or 4 cyl auto Vit would do it but I heard today that all the 4.875 rear R&P's are different and am trying to confirm this. The size needed has a 118mm I.D like the normal Vit rear instead of 108mm.
