Novice 40 Question
g'day all,
Have just bought oil to do a change in the gearbox / transfer on my 4 speed manual '81'model 40 series. Have the gregories manual but it doesnt show a pic of my gearbox / transfer, only the early models and the 5 speed. These may be blatantly obvious questions for some so excuse my ignorance lol. Now i presumethat the drain plug is on the bottom somewhere. And have worked out that the filler for the gearbox is on the left hand side somewhere. Now how the hell do you get the bottle up there to fill it up?? I have heard you can take the top cover off and fill it from here? it that correct? Also cannot find the drain or the filler for the transfer case?? Has anyone done this before on their shorty and can help me out????
Thanks in advance,
Adam

Im here for the sausage!
transfer case similar deal matey.
while you have the filler plugs out why not do yourself a favour and get one of those oil bypass hoses (im about to invest in one)
you hook them up to both filler plugs so the oil doesnt get stuck in one box after going up or down a hill.
its a common problem in this model cruiser box.
i noticed once i changed the oil and i think it was the gbox but anyways one of them had heaps of oil. the other was rather struggling. i undid the filler first to make sure i was sweet and bam out it poured!

Yeah, so do actually, I find it find it easier to get an old bottle with a long hole and get the old man to squeeze the oil down from the outside of the 4wd while you (or he) holds the tube into either of the box’s.bad_religion_au wrote:filler on transfer on back of tcase half way up
personally i find pumping easier than pullin the gearstick cover.
Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times
I think this is what you mean.Reddo wrote:Yeah, so do actually, I find it find it easier to get an old bottle with a long hose and get the old man to squeeze the oil down from the outside of the 4wd while you (or he) holds the tube into either of the box’s.bad_religion_au wrote:filler on transfer on back of tcase half way up

I have used this many times on the 75, however last time I put a bottle of that Lucas oil improver in the gearbox & it took over 1hr it to drain the 1L lucas bottle.
That stuff is super sticky, but makes a massive difference to the gearbox. Quieter, better shifting (especially when cold) & I beleive that I get better fuel economy. I am now down to 11.4L/100kms
I now use it in my engine, gearbox, transfer & diffs.

Excuse my ignorance, but can we have a demonstration of this...
I have a compressor, and I HATE pumping the oil into the POS...
Or can you buy a little unit to do this aswell?

Thanks for the replys guys, i ended up buying an elcheapo hand pump from supercheap. (looks like the ones off the liquid soap dispensers but giant sized) Worked well for the 1st 1.5lt then it started to sh!t its self, go the job done though. Next time i'll give the compressor idea a shot
