I would appreciate those part numbers. I haven't had any probs with the D,C switch yet, but it sounds like I will. :(

You may be able to find a VDO style switch at the wreckers too. I know the old Charade I owned had a similar type screw in thermo switch that was connected via a relay to turn the thermo fan on.

Late '80s -early '90s model three cylinder Charades are the ones I'm talking about. (G11, G100, G102 series)

Tridon make thermo fan switches to suit also, most auto parts stores will know what u r talking about. They come in a heap of different thread sizes and heat ranges. Part number is "TFS..." depending on heat range u want.

If u dont want to goto the trouble of changing your radiator, u can bolt a Bundera radiator shroud straight onto a standard Hilux radiator and a 16" thermo fits in where the old clutch fan runs. This is the easiest and cheapest way i know.
The other option is run the Falcon twin thermo's, that come with a shroud complete, but u need to have a radiator the size of a GQ or Rangie.

dave, i will get you those au fans new from ford cheaper than that, let me know if you want em, i use em on my truck, only gets hot when it boosts too high and starts pinging constantly

but i would recomend having them off when playing/driving through deep mud and warter to avoid damage.

We've only ever run electric thermos on any of our bush going 4x4's. We tend to be the opposite of everyone on this forum as we tend to do things at speed so every spare bit of power there is we like at the rear wheel. We've had to tow many a friend home who've hit a rut, mud or even water at speed the wrong way, suddenly the fan's thru the radiator. You have to get into the habit of switching on the thermo as soon as you start crawling (whether that be in the bush or peak hour traffic) or caning the engine.

HP is not the issue for most of us becky, it's which keeps opur rockcrawler cooler or survives a dunking better.

I lost a fan last weekend - nearly thru radiator. It was a clutch type, but in the end it wasn't the clutch that jammmed - the water pump pulley came clean off.......

I think any consideration of electronic fan should consider electronic water pump too now.......


The two combined usually free up more han twice the power of just the fan.

Having said that, with the risk of alternator failure from drowning, anythign electrical is suspect.

If you want to set up an electronic fan override for water/mud crossings - so it doesn't propell itself into the radiator - get one from Jaycar or Tandy that will turn itself back on after 1 minute or so (time adjustable).

you push the button it turns itself off the require dtime. Combine with a thermostatic switch (if there's enough water it shoudln't get hot) and you should never have your radiator and fan copulating.
