G18A Baleno into sierra

Post by Gutless »

I have just fitted a G16B baleno motor and vit box into a sierra.

I have another sierra which I want to fit a slightly larger motor. I'm not concerned about legalities at this piont.

Q1. Is the G18A the same block as the G16?

Q2. Can I fit the twin cam head off a G18A onto my G16B? ( both engines are transversely mounted in the balenos)

Q3. Will I still have to run the hydraulic clutch from the G18A if I bolt it up to a vitara 5speed, and run a vit flywhel and clutch.

Thanks in advance

I've never heard of or seen a G18 engine by Suzuki. The biggest engine in the G series blocks are either a G16A or G16B-1590cc. I think you'll find it is a J18A which came out in the Baleno GTX (sedan, hatch and wagon). The J18A is a derivative of the J20A engine found in the SV420 W/T Vitara (97-99) and Grand Vitara (98+). I've done a little homework on this and found that the J and G blocks are two totally different engines and have next to no common componentry.

May have come out in the States but guarranteed was not released in Australia. As I previously put forward (and as per thread title) the Baleno that was released in Australia with an 1800 engine was a J18A and not a G18A. It was only out for a few years.

Looking at the sites listed none offer a stroke and bore size, even if did exist I'd be reluctant to persue using it as it would still be a rarity and in Australia would very hard to obtain parts for.

the J18 is a completily different engine configration to the G16 engines

the "J" series runs a timing DOHC setup with a very narrow head compared to the G series GTI heads and the belhousing and engine mounting configrations are totally different too

But you can stroke a G16 to an 1790cc engine with a GTI twin cam head
and i know how to build one too

ask me nicely and i might be able to help you out or point you in the rite direction

If you visit the redbook site, it gives specs on the 96 1.8 baleno as having a G18A. The G18 was then replaced with the J series. Redbook only list vehicles that were available for sale in australia NEW. So that motor should be floating around somewhere here in OZ.

Mate, let me know when you find one.

I regularly consult to suppliers of automotive products and services on Suzuki related matters. To date I've never come across a G18A engine of any description in any Australian production Suzuki motor vehicle. I assure you most books with information relating Suzuki motor vehicles is so far wrong, it's not funny. Most guys on this forum have a much better idea than the so called experts.

hey why not just look in the papers for a 96 Baleno 1.8l
Ring 'em up and ask them to quote the engine number from the papers.
Say you need to REVS check it

I almost feel like going out to a shopping centre and go check or the engine numbers for Daewoos and the like.. afte finding out a twin cam motor from a hyundai was a Nissan built i'm certain there are hidden engines lurking in the unsuspecting 'crap' brands that hold
(Our Mighty Boy cousins have found a F8B upgrade in a Daewoo Matiz for example)

I'm now curious about this G18A engine so did some homework. Found some details on the engine at the Ajusa website. Ajusa is one of the biggest engine parts manufacturers in the world and I have always found their info to be pretty close on being correct. They list a G18A engine-1840cc (bore size 84mm) for the Baleno, Sidekick and Esteem (Swift). Whilst the site is in Spanish it can be navigated.

Esteem is the baleno in the spanish speaker countries, I know it because that was the name of the baleno in Venezuela, Swift was also swift over there.

I think if you do a little research that you'll find that the G18 is a J20A based engine. They used it in the Sidekick Sports in the US (our widetrack 2.0 Vitara) instead of the 2.0 as it wouldn,t meet their emissions requirements at the time. It's just that they seem to have used "G" instead of "J" for some reason that is causing the confusion. The engines are quite different and the parts aren't interchangeable although you can adapt the 1.8 or 2.0 to a 1.6 or 1.3 transmission.

did some ringing around today, and the general consensis is that there wasn't a commercially released G18 in australia. They apparently use a chain driven timing system , not belt driven, and wuldn't be suitable anyway.

I take it there wasn't a DOHC version of the G16 at all?

I agree with CJ, the G18 engine that is sometimes listed is mistaken for the J18A. Any information listing a G18 engine in an Aust. production Baleno is definately incorrect. The Baleno GTX was released on the market in 4/96 and Suzuki always listed that in contained a J18A engine.

The J18A engine is a chain driven DOHC.

In Australia at least there has never been a DOHC G16 engine, only either G16A SOHC 8V (Vitara 7/88-10/94) or G16B SOHC 16V (Vitara 8/91-97, Swift sed 89-94).
