Loss Of Power Whilst On An angle/Hill
Sorry if this is a repeat of another post, search was not working for me tonight..
I have a 1984 sierra with the 1Ltr engine with extractors. I went out today and it was running purfect untill i was going up a nice muddy hill with some rather large ruts. cos the zook has a small track i was in one rut and on the top of another causing me to lean a fair bit to the left and was also heading up hill (see attached pic). At this stage the idle went rather bad like it wanted to stall, i could rev it fine whilst in neutral but when i applied load it had no go at all. i was going nowhere in first low.
Question 1. Is there an explination for this? is it fuel starvation?
Question 2. Is there an easy way to overcome it. say electronic fuel pump.
Question 3. What would be the ideal solution? without changing the engine.
Question 4. Webber carbie? i have heard they might fix the problem. Y/N?

Yeah it was in 4 low. It was gong fine then decided to loose all power but once i got to the top on the flat no problem at all.....

What was happening is your carby float chamber was running low on fuel due to tha particular angle you were on, eesentially starving the engine. This also explains why it ran normally when you got to the top of the hill on level ground. Believe it or not, what you experoienced is normal. You learn which way to drive to lessen the effects of angles on the fuel system.

Electric pump will make little to no difference. What is happening is just a downside of the opperation of a carby. At big angles, it causes the carby to either starve due to the float bowl fuel moving away from the jets, or pouring out the vent and flooding the motor. While you can modify the carby or fit other carbys, the best option is either injection or LPG. That or just learn to deal with it.

I see that there is no real easy solution but if i was to try a different carbie would that make a difference?

1ltr carby's are ralitivly good on angles, compared 1.3, webber and other carbies.
Injection is one soloution

i had my zook to the point where my wheels were about to leave the bround today and the carby didnt miss a beat so it must just be some carbie as ive been on heaps of wierd angle and never had a problem
the only thing i can think of is being on the side like that and goin up a hil where does the fuel get sucked from in the tank if its the front right then that could partly explain why it was being starved of fuel..

What i might do is put a kit through the carbie and see if that makes a difference.
The thing that is still stumping me is that when on the angle and the idol went ruff i could still rev it past the 5000rpm mark. if starving on fuel would i have been able to do that????
And is there a performance kit i could put through the carbie or is there just a generic kit for the 1Lt carbie?

When you press the accelerator there is a squirt of petrol that gets added to the normal amount going through the carbie. I should have said that when i rev it to 5000rpm i can hold it there. it had no problem reving past 5000rpm but did not like any load on the engine at all...

Have had carbie trouble on my 413'S,not only going up hill,carn't remenber my 410 carbie that well,I would recomend a rebuild,could have been something as simple as s#*t in the idle jet at the wrong time,413's suffer below 2000 rpm but will go like f#*k above this with the idle jet blocked,this can be intermttent or fool on,gets some good looks when you pull up at a petrol station with a 2000 plus idle

PS Had a Russian Range Rover for a while it would go about 100 meters up a 45% hill before dieing wind over for about 1 minute before starting
