Just how good do the V8 diesels go? there are few i've heard of - oldsmobile engine, old truck engines, and some others, but how do they perform? i mean come up to a decent hill on highway, put foot down, do they pull good?
I'm just thinking about it... either turbo the 2H, or go V8 petty/gas or diesel. I should prob do a search. Will do tomorrow perhaps.
Anyhow, any ideas feel free.

How do they compare though in down low lugging? My 6.5 chev has unstopable low down torque
personally i think diesel V8s drive the same as petrol V8s .... the only difference is the rev limit.
In my cruiser , i let the clutch out in 1st low range at idle WITH my foot already on the brake , and it drove thru the brakes (75 series discs / drums)
i would recomend taking one for a test drive first , do your own comparisons

Only rumours for now. Supposedly Toyota needs a diesel V8 for the Tundra to compete with American truck manufacturers in the US. I've heard a few stories of the chev V8 Diesel going about the same as a 75 series diesel ( maybe turbo'd, can't remember), so dunno if they're worth the hassle, but i haven't driven one or been in one.
First bet i think will be to turbo the 2H, see how it goes, then if i'm not happy with that look for alternatives. I'm just after more highway mainly - low range it crawls along just fine - although i reckon i'll need more grunt in mud.
But V8's are just so much TUFFA!

A friend of mine has a 6.5 chev in a 60 series and in goes hard. It was supercharged with a cappa and intercooled for a while but it's now back to a N/A 6.5.
I followed him from Sydney to texas once and he only used 8 dollars more in fuel for the return trip. Low down grunt was awesome, it could shear wheelstuds if you were not carefull. It also runs front and rear lokkas. The truck is a weapon.

Have you thought about using the later model twin cam TD out of a 100series. They pop up from time to time with gearboxe/transfers attatched. Hardest bit of the conversion would be the wiring but if it comes with a loom & puter, that would be fairly easy. Good idea for parts availiability if you travel a bit.

Diesels generally work better as in-line engines than V engines. That is why most diesels are in-line rather than V. You can also make each cylinder much bigger than in a petrol engine.
ISUZU has a 4.7L, 4 cylinder turbo diesel, and a 6-cylinder version of the same engine.
