hi/low pinion gearsets, any different?

got a set of 4.8 lux crownwheel and pinions and noticed on the box they came in (which was the box the gears replacing the ones i got came in) says hi pinion 5.29 anyways this means the guy must have had high pinion centres right?? will the 4.8s ive got fit in my normal centres or not?

I don't think I completely understand your question!

high pinion gears are like a mirror image of 'normal' gears, so you cannot put high pinion gears ( technically, reverse rotation - the height of the pinion is arbitrary - you can put them upside down and they become a low pinion but will turn the axle backwards!) into a low pinion housing.

they way to tell the difference is, the reverse rotation (high pinion) pinion gear is cut with a right-handed helix. that is, if you hold the gear head in your right hand with the shaft pointing towards you, and you rotate the shaft clockwise with your left hand, the gear will tend to move away from you. the standard rotation pinion is cut with a left-handed helix.

Just read the box more detailed and it says "landcruiser 8inch 5.29 high pinion" think maybe the fellow that these gears came from got new centres aswell, meaning his 4.8s that i now own are actually from std low pinion diffs....

ok did the hand thing on the pinion, when i hold my right hand out like a nut, then take the pinion shaft in my left hand with the shaft pointing at me then turn it clockwise though my right hand it twists like a thread through my hand and just naturally pulls in and moves towards me low pinion!

If you put high pinion gears into a low pinion diff wouldn't it rotate the same way but the gears would driving on the overdrive side of the teeth?

they just won't go in that way (will they? err head mess!). what I was talking about was if you flip an entire 'high pinion' diff it becomes a 'low pinion', but turns the wrong way.
